Something about your list made me think of Bruce Chatwin in a word association kind of way - I would certainly suggest his book 'In Patagonia' or his biography by Nicholas Shakespeare. Chatwin certainly had his critics but his style was unique enough that the term Chatwinesque is at time used as a description for styles of writing. That in itself is a pretty enviable legacy for any travel writer. Also he was a big fan of Moleskine notebooks and it is said the contemporary versions of them are styled on his descriptions. Cool.
