Written by Luke of Charming Sardinia

Situated in the Mediterranean Sea between Italy, France, Spain and Africa, Sardinia has long been a strategic trading and service post for conquering empires. This means the island’s culture and goods are an intriguing hybrid of influences, making this proud autonomous region not just a great place for the tourist, beach goer, or hiker, but for the eager shopper as well.

While the bigger cities in Sardinia do have larger outdoor gallerias, the true heart of Sardinian commerce still takes place in traditional central markets called Mercato Civile. In the capital city of Cagliari, the northern city of Sassari, and the western city of Oristano, flea markets are especially well-frequented, attracting traditional Sardinian artisans from all over the region. Artistic pottery runs a plenty, as do woven baskets, ceramics and handmade woodcarvings. Every region of Sardinia will have its own specialty, so if you know you’re looking for, say, the perfectly hewn willow basket, it’s best to ask the locals where to go (hint: a little town near Sassari called Castelsardo).

Boutiques, which are often run out of the family home, carry very similar wares, though they are often a little more expensive. These smaller shops just can’t be beat when it comes to specialty pottery, which often has a Greek feel to it with blue and white coloring. The boutique scene is also quite strong when it comes to precious metal products like copperware, gold, and semi-precious stones. If you’re staying mainly in Cagliari, the best streets to check out are Largo Carlo Felice, Via Roma, Via Dante and Via Paoli. Jewelry fans might also consider taking a day trip to the little town of Isili – about an hour and a quarter northeast of Cagliari – to visit some of the region’s best known jewelry makers.

Even the smallest towns throughout Sardinia will have central markets and boutiques, so be on the lookout wherever you go. Outdoor flea markets tend to run on Sundays either every week (Cagliari) or the last Sunday of every month (Sassari). Boutiques keep more frequent hours, though Sardinians do love their relaxation and summer holidays, so don’t be taken off guard if a store is unexpectedly closed.

The most successful shoppers will be those ready and willing to hunt for the best products all across Sardinia, whether on foot, bike, bus, or car. Trenitalia runs trains between major cities like Sassari and Cagliari, and the bus and train company ARST operates both local and regional services at reasonable prices (though you’ll have to be patient, as the latter’s trains are known to be poky). Car rental is available through a number of companies, so it’s best to use a price comparison site to find the most affordable deal. If you’re really planning on shopping throughout most of the island, a car is definitely the best way to go so you can zip between many small towns. The main north-south highway, SS131, will take you from Cagliari to Sassari in a little over three hours, and it’s easy to stop at vibrant Oristano along the way.

Shopping in Sardinia is a true exploration. So get out there and have an adventure!

Luke is addicted to travelling and a blogger who works with Charming Sardinia http://www.charmingsardinia.com who are specialists in luxury holidays in Sardinia.

Written by Matthew Nunn

With over a thousand islands and in excess of 200 inhabited, it’s a small wonder there’s any Mediterranean Sea left. Despite what may be happening in Greece today (economically), nothing can take away what happened in Greece in the past. This history as well as the outstanding natural beauty has Greece tipped as one of the most popular travel destinations of 2012.

Despite being bound by a strong cultural and historical heritage, many people repeatedly return to Greece because of the variety offered by the different Greek Islands. This variety can range from traditional local dishes, ancient monuments, stunning cliffs and white sandy beaches. The Greek islands are clumped into various groups which span across several seas of the Mediterranean. Here’s a roundup of some of her islands and what they have to offer.

A harbor of Kos.

The Dodecanese Islands

Rhodes is the largest out of the Dodecanese Islands and is a great option if you want a one-stop holiday to a Greek island. You can get a real taster of all the best aspects to the Mediterranean here, so pack an appetite for the busy restaurant scene, swimsuit for the many bays and inquisitive mind for the historic architecture in the Old Town and the Palace of the Grand Master. For the daring there’s the Casino Rodas to gamble the night away.

Kos is one for the history fans. Archaeological wonders are scattered over the island that date all the way back to the 4th century, and this is also where Hippocrates operated. Kos provides some great urban days out, as it is famed for Kos city with its large squares and beautiful architecture.

Zakynthos' Navagio Bay.

The Ionian Islands

Corfu is another island known for its urban settings; Corfu town with a UNESCO World Heritage status is immensely popular and is an example of the parts of Greece influenced by the West. The city is extensive for an island and provides many opportunities for strolling down narrow cobbled lanes and checking out palaces and fine estates, or even the Venetian Citadel.

Zakynthos is primarily famous for Navagio Bay and its half buried ship wreck. This makes for a simply stunning photograph, but is also typical of the jagged cliffs that run along parts of the islands coastline. Zante (as much of the world calls this island) is also known for the various traditional festivals on the island as well as its wildlife, both flora and fauna, including the loggerhead turtle).

The Corinth Canal.

Peloponnese Peninsula (just off the mainland)

The Corinth Isthmus Canal now separates this Peninsula from the mainland of Greece, therefore making it technically an island. It is considerably larger than a traditional island holiday, so taking it all in will be virtually impossible. Ancient history runs deep here, with choices from Olympia, Mycenae and Argos in the North down to the south where many of the beaches are. This is a holiday for those who will also appreciate a strong fishing and agricultural heritage.

Night in Mykonos.

The Cyclades

Mykonos…if a volcano and black sands can’t tempt you here, perhaps the romantic reputation might. The bare hills, sandy beaches and white-washed houses create what for many is the typical scene of an amazing and picturesque Mediterranean holiday, explaining much of its popularity — especially as a honeymoon destination. This has all built up a reputation of tranquility, with a traditional fishing industry but also a sophisticated nightlife.

Santorini is actually a small group of islands which carries on the romantic reputation of Mykonos and is the supposed location of the lost city of Atlantis. It is formed on an active volcano and typifies much of the cliff lined coastlines of the Greek islands. The capital, Fira, occupies a commanding high spot on the island, and it’s not just the white buildings but the blue domed churches that steal the attention here.

The Samaria Gorge, a popular spot among hikers.

Crete

If you’re the sort of person who feels island holidays can be limiting for the adventurous, Crete will happily prove you wrong. The island contains many secluded villages as well as ancient Minoan Palaces such as Knossas, however the natural scenery also steps up to the plate. Crete is full of bold landscapes, hitting peaks and troughs with mountains and gorges respectively. For expert hikers, there is the challenging E4 long distance walking path that offers little help in the way of signs or terrain.

This is not to say it is all action-packed. There are many luxury hotels on the island as well as numerous harbors for those looking for a relaxing holiday.

All in all, the islands of Greece create a myriad of opportunities for holidays, and can cater to a variety of tourists and travellers. Lone adventurists, beach dwellers and families will all find something for themselves here, and that’s all without even considering mainland Greece.

When booking a romantic Valentine’s getaway for that special someone, you may initially consider conventional destinations such as Paris, Rome, or Venice. There’s no doubt that these old faithful’s tick all the right boxes for an intimate weekend away, but have you contemplated Budapest? Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Budapest remains to be an untapped treasure for even the most seasoned city break traveller. Check out these heart-warming, romantic activities available in Budapest, sure to make your Valentine’s break a truly memorable occasion.

1. Soak in the sights with a Danube River Cruise – The River Danube meanders through the heart of the city, separating the once provincial towns of Buda and Pest. Treat your partner to a relaxing river cruise, which will see you gliding past many of Budapest’s magnificent waterside landmarks, including Hungarian Parliament, Matthias Church and Chain Bridge. Turn up the heat by choosing an evening cruise, with a romantic 4 course dinner included, and often live music.

2. Wine tasting at Buda Castle – For the perfect excuse to cuddle close to your loved one, visit the labyrinth of underground corridors and tunnels that lie in the depths of Buda Castle. Originally carved as a hide out during the middle ages, this basement is now used as a wine cellar, and those who dare to descend can participate in a wine tasting tour, and explore the history behind the tunnels. Connoisseurs will introduce a selection of Hungarian fine wines and champagnes to sample.

3. Indulge in a thermal bath – Budapest is renowned for its thermal bath houses, which are believed to have healing and therapeutic abilities, due to the highly sulphuric water. Win some serious brownie points with that special someone, by treating them to a visit to the Gellert Hotel and Baths, which is arguably the most attractive bath house in the city. The baths are a stunning representation of Neo-classical architecture, surrounded by marble colonnades, and stain glass windows and ceilings, making it a romantic location indeed.

4. A fairy-tale in Fisherman’s Bastion – An unmissable piece of architecture along the Budapest cityscape, Fisherman’s Bastion is a combination of exquisite Neo-gothic parapets, turrets and cascading staircases. The terrace is located at the summit of Castle Hill, offering breath-taking, panoramic views of Budapest. Standing within the grounds of this enchanting building, you will feel as if you have been swept into a fairy-tale land, gazing over the rest of the kingdom.

5. Stroll around Margaret Island – Escape to the tranquil hideaway of Margaret Island, located in the centre of the River Danube, spanning 2km in length. This luscious parkland is well maintained, with landscaped parks, pristine lawns and flowerbeds. You won’t be disturbed by engine noise or traffic, as the island is a pedestrian only oasis. You may however, see the odd horse-drawn carriage trotting by. Stroll around hand-in-hand and marvel at the historic monuments, fountains and medieval ruins that adorn the island, and enjoy a drink or meal together at one of the island’s bars or restaurants.

To compliment your romantic break in Budapest, why not book a self-catering Budapest apartment, and enjoy the privacy of your own space.

Catherine Luther writes for European apartment specialist, Loving Apartments – providers of great value Budapest holiday apartments.
Despite having all the usual seaside clichés of pier, fairground rides and candyfloss, Brighton has a very different side. Dubbed ‘London by the sea’, this hip and happening city continues to surprise and intrigue visitors who flock here for independent shops, award winning food, friendly locals and a thriving art and alternative scene. For hipsters everywhere, here are seven reasons to visit the coolest seaside city in England.

1. The boutique shopping

Brighton has its fair share of the usual big name brands but it’s the variety of small, independent outlets that really makes Brighton a haven for those with money to burn. The fashionable ‘Laines’ is a good place to start. The half a square mile area is home to over 300 unique shops – the largest selection of independent retailers on the South Coast. Ty the North Laines for everything from vintage designer wear to dusty records and wander the more picturesque South Laines for bespoke jewellery and trinkitry from every corner of the globe.

2. The cafés and restaurants

The bohemian atmosphere of this city-by-the-sea is reflected in some of the cafes and restaurants on offer. Forget fish and chips on the pier (although there are plenty), Brighton is also home to a hearty clutch of vegetarian, vegan and organic eateries, many of which have several awards to their names. Head for Kensington Gardens in the North Laines for a choice of laid back coffee shops where you can stop and people watch for a while.

3. The alternative music scene

The birthplace of the ‘big beat’ music genre, and home to DJ and music producer Fatboy Slim, Brighton has a thriving music scene. From the Big Beach Boutique open-air dance nights (which attract thousands) to the many intimate venues and rooms above pubs, this city has hundreds of places to see great local acts and big touring bands. Other famous local bands originating from Brighton include British Sea Power and The Kooks.

4. It has a love of art and design

Another of Brighton’s obvious strengths is its nurturing of artistic talent. Artists, designers, painters and all manor of creatives are based here, and the city offers plenty of chances to see some of their work. The annual Brighton Festival in May is a three-week celebration of all things arty, and attracts over 300,000 people a year. The Artists Open House scheme sees Brighton residents opening their doors to the public, where they are able to buy works of art directly from the artist.

5. The cool boutique hotels

Brighton’s old reputation as a place for a dirty weekend by the sea has changed somewhat, and it is now home to some of the UK’s best boutique and design hotels. The Myhotel – described as “where Freddie Mercury meets the Maharishi” – is an ultra modern, almost futuristic hotel in the centre of the city, while Hotel Pelirocco is a saucy rock ‘n roll retreat with themed rooms, individually styled by artists. Check in to the Play Room suite for an 8ft round bed, a plunge bath, and a burlesque-style pole dancing area.

6. Its open-minded outlook

Brighton has always embraced all cultural scenes and sub-cultures. With a bohemian air, the city is a very accepting place. Home to a thriving gay and lesbian scene, Brightonians and visitors are free to express themselves. The annual summer Pride Parade attracts a huge crowd to the city, and there is no shortage of welcoming pubs, clubs and hotels.

7. It’s one of the greenest cities in the UK

Voted the green capital of Britain, Brighton wears its Green credentials for all to see. The city is home to one the largest population of vegetarians in the country and is the first and the only borough in the country to have elected a Green Party MP, making political history. For a unique trip out take an eco-friendly bus to Earthship Brighton – a green building made from waste car tyres and recycled materials. It also collects its own water and generates its own heat and power.

Ski resort holidays are always popular over the festive period among holidaymakers and ardent skiers alike, providing the perfect location to celebrate Christmas and welcoming the New Year in style. These events might be over, but there is still huge opportunity to hit the slopes and take advantage of the fresh snow. What’s more, there is no need to worry about booking your ski trip in advance, as there is still an impressive range of last minute ski holidays available from sites such as Teletext Holidays — just waiting to be explored.

If you feel overwhelmed by the wealth of last minute deals out there, here is four top-rated ski destinations to inspire you:

Soldeu, Andorra

Are you a beginner and want to learn the ropes on some of the best nursery slopes around? Soldeu is the place for you. Great for families holidaying on a budget, Soldeu boasts beautiful scenery and the vast majority of ski instructors are native English speakers.

For more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldeu

Courmayeur, Italy

If you are a fan of the après ski as much as the slopes – and let’s face it, who isn’t – you may find the bustling restaurants and bars of Courmayeur hit the spot. Let your taste buds get swept up in the decadent cuisine on offer at the resort, including gourmet food and polenta.

For more info see http://www.courmayeur-montblanc.com/en/

Flaine, France

With its safe environment for children, Flaine is the perfect resort to take the little ones to learn new skills that they will hopefully take with them into adulthood, and perhaps even pass on to their own children. What’s more, there are games rooms aplenty to keep them entertained after a day on the slopes when you want to kick back and relax.

For more info see http://www.flaine.com/en/winter/index.htm

Morzine, France

If skis aren’t your primary apparatus on the slopes, then you might be interested to know that Morzine is often rated the best resort for avid snowboarders. This resort may have a traditional charm about it, but is also known for its vibrant personality. There aren’t many ski resorts that can claim they have ice-climbing, hot-air balloons and helicopter rides.

Morzine also features some great beginner runs known as “The Super Morzine”. These runs are wide, easily accessible and great fun for everyone travelling down them.

It would be unwise to believe the misconception that last minute holidays significantly reduce your holiday options, as the facts show your position is quite the contrary – you really are spoilt for choice. Get out there and feel free to come back and let us how it went.

London: Portobello Road (& the Saturday market)

Rent an apartment for a weekend through somewhere like CityBaseApartments.com, who offer London apartments short stays and long stays alike. Nestled in West London’s rather salubrious Notting Hill area, Portobello road is a haven for treasure seekers and vintage lovers alike. Sauntering from the tube past Notting Hill’s white and decidedly summery-looking Georgian townhouses to Portobello Road is something to behold in itself – but as soon as you reach Portobello road, you’ll know about it. Curiosity shops of all shapes, sizes and persuasions offer Aladdin’s-Cave-style experiences, perfect for those with a taste for anything artistic, eccentric or outrageous.

Berlin: Badeschiff

Otherwise known as the ‘Bathing Ship’, Badeschiff sits atop the Spree River and is hailed as one of the best party places in Berlin. This boat boasts no less than a floating pool, an open-air bar and a beach-style sunbathing area and offers massages, fitness tuition, concerts and nightclub parties. The place attracts crowds even in the winter when they simply install a couple of saunas and continue the party by covering the vessel with a big white membrane.

Copenhagen: Christiana

Europe’s most famous 850-strong squat, Christiania is located in Copenhagen’s Christianahavn and is probably most famous for its lawlessness when it comes to cannabis. However — don’t be put off by this, because that part of Christiania can be ignored as easily as it can be found. Whatever season you visit, this place really is a spectacle worth visiting. From quaint little hand-build eco homes to a vegan café and an all-female iron monger workshop, Christiania offers plenty to marvel at. And if you manage to walk from the main entrance all the way through, there’s an incredible grotto-style café to greet you on the other side.

Barcelona: El Born

If you’ve been to Spain before, then you’ll know it’s relaxed — and the Spanish love nothing more than late nights, parties and fantastic food. Head to Barcelona’s new cultural quarter, El Born (or if you want to sound more with it, it’s just ‘Born’). Begin your evening around 10pm at one of Barcelona’s best wine bars, La Vinya del Senyor, followed by Cuines Santa-Caterina for a nice, sharable and light tapas dinner before midnight. Be careful not to eat too much though — there’s plenty of dancing to be done at the Woman Caballero nightclub. But don’t go over August — most of the city shuts for the month.

Paris: Paule Caillet’s Promenades Gourmandes cookery course

A non-residential cookery course, this can easily be squeezed into your girly weekend perfectly — although it’s not cheap. Cordon Bleu chef and tour guide, Paule Caillat, will guide you and your friends around some of Paris’ very best markets, herb and truffle shops, among other places, and — the Pièce de résistance — the kitchens at the prestigious Hotel de Crillo, before you head back to cook something scintillating.

Canary Wharf at night.

London is renowned around the world for its diversity and attracts millions of tourists year after year. Visitors are never short of things to do in the English capital – after all, there are 32 different boroughs in Greater London — but there is no way that anybody can see everything worth seeing in London in one day. London is a long-stay city.

Apartment rentals in the capital are popular amongst tourists because they provide the opportunity to chill out in luxury and see the city in style. The attractiveness of Kensington and Canary Wharf apartments, for instance, as alternative ways to experience London is growing, even despite the recession.

The best bits of London are spread right across the city, so you’d be hard pressed to fit them all into one day when you consider the travel time involved. Yes, taking the Tube is quick and easy (and an essential part of experiencing London), but the layout of the city means that you’d spend half your day on it travelling to your destinations. It’s best to take your time, soak it all up and be able to put your feet up at the end of the day.

Most first-time visitors want to see all the major attractions like Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace, but there is so much more to London than the international tourism industry recognises. Have you heard of the Ice Bar just off Regent Street? A bar made of ice in which you can enjoy an ice cold cocktail in a glass made of ice with your friends. Cool, huh? Then there’s the London Dungeons to send even more shivers down your spine.

For accommodation, people who visit London tend to prefer centrally located properties in zone 1 or zone 2. We may not be able to afford some of the penthouse apartments the city has to offer but, with a bit of research, you can find luxurious and affordable apartments based right where you want to be.

Enjoying London is much about not rushing from one place to the next. You’ll enjoy your stay in the city more if you take things in your pace and discover the city on your own (instead of only following a guidebook’s advice). And while the touristy sights are highly visited for a reason, you’ll be glad you saved time to see London beyond the tourist attractions.

Many of us have to tighten our belts right now due to the global economic crisis. But with a little forethought you can still enjoy your annual trip away, it just takes a little bit more research and organisation to make sure you save as much money as you can.

If you funds are tight, it is still possible to take advantage of airport parking but you might have to look around for early bird deals and drop down the level of service for the park and ride service. The park and ride service is normally the most basic service that the airport parking companies offer. The car park is usually situated off-site and a couple of miles away from the airport which means you will have to take a shuttle bus that is provided by the company to the airport building. Don’t worry though. These are available 24 hours a day and run on a regular basis like every ten minutes or so.

If you have a large family, consider sharing the car journey (and split the cost of the petrol, if you are all adults). This could save you an awful lot more money than if you went by train and had to pay individual fares. The car parking is charged by each car so it makes sense to fit as many of you as you safely can into one vehicle.

On the return trip you can travel in peace knowing your car will be safe and sound waiting for you to drive it home.

The great choice of airport parking throughout the UK means you can select between several services to fit your budget ranging from the low-cost park and ride option all the way to the more costly valet parking services and the onsite airport parking.

Onsite parking at the airport is the ultimate in convenience as it means you can literally just step out of your car with your luggage, minutes from check-in, but as spaces in the car park are usually limited you will often find parking is at a premium in these types of car parks.

In the UK, you can find parking at your local airport including parking at Luton Airport, parking at Manchester airport, Gatwick airport parking and Dublin airport parking.

Scotland boasts some of the most beautiful places in the UK and offers plenty of life-affirming things to do. Every traveller most likely doesn’t want the same experience from a holiday and, unsurprisingly, Scotland can cater for this variety in hunger. The delightful capital city of Edinburgh can probably cater for most of that hunger alone.

For a start, it is the home of the legendary Fringe Festival — an event that attracts thousands of visitors every August. It goes on for the whole month and features some of the most creative people in the world strutting their stuff on the streets and stages. Edinburgh has one of the best shopping streets in the UK, too: the Royal Mile. Particularly lovely at Christmas time.

If you’d rather avoid city life on your travels, Scotland certainly isn’t short of striking countryside. Highland holidays in Scottish country cottages are popular with travellers all over the world and are even becoming much more popular with like-minded people who are based in Britain.

The Cairngorm mountain region in the north of the country, located south east of Inverness, is a gigantic area that offers some of the best walking spots and most spectacular views around. Be sure to take your camera when you’re exploring this part of Scotland.

Loch Ness is located very close to the Cairngorms, just south west of Inverness. Everybody knows why this loch is famous, but nobody has yet proved the monster’s existence. There have, of course, been many claims and a few grainy pictures to boot, which are what attract visitors by the bucket load year upon year. If you’re in this part of the country, pay Loch Ness a visit to catch a glimpse of Nessie herself.

For the whiskey fans out there, Scotland is a mecca. It is home to some of the most famous distilleries in the world, many of which host tours and taster sessions. Dufftown and the Isle of Jura are two rather accomplished distillery locations to visit.

The Isle of Skye, in the Inner Hebrides, is famously one of the most romantic and scenic places in Scotland. If walking in the hills is your kind of thing, no trip to the country would be complete without the Isle of Skye.

And if you fancy a bit of city life after all, Edinburgh is only a car, bus or train ride away.

Some 13 million visitors flock to Wales each year to explore the rolling countryside, soak up some culture and enjoy the local hospitality. When it comes to picking where to stay, many people opt to make a home from home in one of the hundreds of different holiday cottages in Wales.

Picking where to visit, though, is slightly trickier than deciding on which form of accommodation to book, so here at Travel Blissful we’ve handpicked the top five places.

Cardiff

Capital cities are always interesting places to take a look around — and Cardiff is certainly no different. The beauty of Cardiff is that everything of interest is located slap bang in the city centre, meaning there’s no need to hop on all kinds of public transport and you can instead explore on foot with relative ease. Whether you fancy checking out the regeneration programme that has given Cardiff Bay an impressive facelift, discovering all about Cardiff Castle or indulging yourself with a spot of retail therapy, there’s plenty to keep you busy for a day or two before you escape from all the hustle and bustle in the great outdoors.

Shell Island

One of the best kept ‘secrets’ in Britain, Shell Island is a campsite with a difference. That’s because one of Europe’s largest campsites becomes cut off from the mainland whenever the tide comes in, which adds a layer of intrigue for those people who pitch a tent on Shell Island. Set over 450 acres, the coastal destination is only accessible in car via a single-track road over an estuary when the tide is out. Chill out on one of the three beaches, have a barbeque in the dunes or relax in the on-site restaurant or bar.

Snowdonia

Climb to the top of Snowdonia and you’ll be rewarded with some of the most stunning views in the whole of the UK. Snowdonia towers some 3,560ft above sea level, which makes it one of the biggest and most demanding mountains in Britain. Feeling energetic? Then it’s well worth making time for a pilgrimage to Snowdonia National Park to tackle one of the many walking and climbing trails that lure people to the area from all over the world.

The Brecon Beacons National Park

Explore the mountain range either on foot or on two wheels and you’ll be amazed by just how beautiful the Brecon Beacons National Park is. Nestled in the area is a series of quint market towns, castles and other attractions as well as plenty of wide open space to get out into and unwind in well away from stresses of everyday life. Make your way around the maze of forests and woodland at your own pace or marvel at the nature and wildlife that the Brecon Beacons National Park is home to.

Wye Valley

The Wye Valley is an area of incredible beauty located right on the border between England and Wales. Everything from a series of cave systems to the remains of numerous Roman settlements can be found in the Wye Valley. Venture to Tintern Abbey to see the best-preserved medieval abbey in Wales or enjoy a day at Chepstow races and have a flutter on the horses. If you’re lucky and win a bit, why not spend it by treating yourself to an extended stay in one of the luxury holiday cottages in Wales.

With its distinctive rugged scenery and cluster of fascinating towns and cities to explore, Yorkshire is one of the most interesting areas of the UK for tourists to visit. One minute you can learn all about historic York, the next you can relax in one of the many Yorkshire cottages set in the beautiful countryside just a short drive away.

Yorkshire really is a county of stark contrasts. From industry cities like Leeds and Sheffield that are undergoing an extensive facelift to the serenity and calmness of the Yorkshire Dales, there’s a real blend of attractions in the white rose county.

Possibly the best place to start a whirlwind tour of the region is in York, which is home to the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. York Minster is a sight to behold and it’s well worth putting aside the time to go inside to take in the splendour of the huge stained-glass windows and to see how the general on-going restoration work is going. Scale the city’s medieval walls and mount the massive hill to Clifford’s Tower, which is part of York Castle. The National Railway Museum, meanwhile, offers a history lesson of different kind and is fun for people of all ages.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

When you’re done shopping or sightseeing in York, escape the crowds and head to the enchanting Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Set over 500 acres of rolling countryside, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park has an array of thought-provoking exhibits that range from wonderful creations to the damn right weird. Walk around at your own pace and marvel at masterpiece after masterpiece crafted out of all manner of unusual materials.

If spending time out in the great outdoors at a place like the Yorkshire Sculpture Park appeals then opt for Yorkshire Dales as your next port of call. Perhaps you want to scale one of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks – Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside? Perhaps you fancy sampling what rural life is like in Yorkshire in the market towns Harrogate, Ilkley and Skipton? Or perhaps you want to check out Aysgarth Falls or Malham Cove or one of the county’s other amazing natural attractions?

With an abundance of places to stay like charming holiday cottages, there are great Yorkshire Dales offers and deals. This gives the opportunity to spend a night or longer well away from the hustle and bustle of city like Leeds. If it’s hustle and bustle that you want, though, then Leeds will be right up your street. It has a vibrant nightlife, restaurants serving food from all around the world, several theatres and excellent shopping facilities.

Finally, no visit to the county is complete without enjoying a nice cup of traditional Yorkshire tea at the world-renowned Bettys tea room in Harrogate. There’s more to this spa town than meets the eye. And, in way, that’s the beauty of Yorkshire in general.

In the Lake District, cottages are one of the best ways to enjoy the countryside. Cumbria is certainly one of the most strikingly beautiful places in the world and it attracts more than fifteen million visitors every year for this reason alone. It is a place for almost every kind of holidaymaker – you can ramble in the mountains and have a picnic or two or you can climb down waterfalls and get your heart racing. The only thing that the Lake District is notorious for is the rain! On sunny days, though, you will be glad you brought a camera.

It’s all very well claiming how good the Lake District is but what are the things that make it so good? What are the best bits about Cumbria?

Without doubt, the most popular places amongst tourists in the Lakes are Bowness and Windermere. Situated right beside Lake Windermere, the two quintessentially English villages are beautiful in their own right and make up what is probably the very heart of the Lakes. In the summertime, they do tend to attract more visitors than the streets have room for, but once peak season dies the tea rooms can be enjoyed in peace and quiet.

Coniston is probably the second most popular and, indeed, beautiful part of the Lakes. It is home to the great Old Man of Coniston, which is a climbing challenge for any walker. Besides, some of the best pubs and tastiest beers can be found in Coniston, particularly the award-winning Bluebird Bitter, so any ale connoisseur is likely to feel right at home here.

Keswick is the place to be for the adrenaline junkies out there. It is one of the best places in the Lakes for rock climbing and ghyll scrambling, so be sure to pack your waterproofs when you’re heading here. If Keswick isn’t enough of a thrill for you, jump out of some trees at Go Ape! in Grizedale Forest or water ski on the same waters that Donald Campbell broke the water speed record in the 1950s and 1960s.

When it comes to places to stay, cottages in Keswick and Kendal accommodation don’t get any better. No matter what you get up to in the great outdoors, relaxing in a cottage is an unbeatable way to unwind at the end of the day.

England and Scotland boast some of the most stunningly beautifully places not only in the UK, but in the world. For holiday cottages, some Scottish border homes and English coast dwellings are amongst the most popular in these parts of the world and their popularity is always on the rise.

People travel from all over the world to stay in cottages in Northumberland and Norfolk, Livingston and London, to experience the beauty of the UK first hand. But where exactly are the places in which you can get the most out of Scotland and England?

Choosing the best bits of anywhere or anything, for that matter, is always subjective, but there are places in the UK that are so beautiful that barely anybody would contest their inclusion in this article. Perhaps the place that would have the lowest rate of disapproval would be the Lake District, which is located in the north western county of Cumbria.

The Lake District attracts millions of visitors every year (the British rain evidently doesn’t put them off). With tranquil villages like Coniston and Hawkshead, it is no wonder that the Lake District is so popular. It not only has some of the most stunning countryside in the world, but it can also boast some of the best beers, the heartiest food and the happiest people in the world. A weekend in the Lake District is always time well spent.

The UK is not exactly renowned for the quality of its weather, but when it is nice, it is rather nice indeed, especially if you go to the right parts of the country. The Brits flock to the beaches at the slightest hint of sunshine, so why not join them? Some of the nicest beaches in the England lie on the Northumbria coast and country. They don’t quite get as much warmth as the southern beaches do, but they are still unmistakably British. Grab yourself an ice cream, set up your windbreak and enjoy the British summertime at its best.

Heading north of the border, we reach the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. No other city is quite like this one; there is a cultural delight everywhere you look, whatever time of year you go. In August, Edinburgh hosts the world famous Fringe Festival, which sees the great creatives of the world converge in one place to share their talent and entertain the public. Hotel prices rather expectedly rise at this time of year, but the festival is most definitely worth a few days of your time.

Finally, we come to not London but Leeds. This northern city almost has everything that London has, only with more personality and less traffic. It has a great theatre, a brilliant music scene and is a hotspot for international concerts. There is always something going on in Leeds and it is much more affordable than the capital.

Even with limited time and a tight budget, you can do Dublin in style if you focus on the Jamestown section near the River Liffey. Charming cheap Dublin hotels are steps away from gorgeous parks crammed with monuments and fronted by free museums, excellent thrift shopping and those legendary Irish pubs. Spare yourself unnecessary delays by mapping out your itinerary in advance so you can make reservations and purchase tickets online before embarking on your whirlwind tour, you don’t want to waste a minute of your 48 hours in Dublin standing in line!

Day 1

Coffee break at Bewley's.

Morning

Fuel up on an authentic Irish breakfast and the best coffee in town at Bewley’s Grafton Street Café — a favorite haunt of Irish writer James Joyce — then stroll a few blocks south to stately St. Stephen’s Green, a public park where you can see Joyce’s commemorative bust facing his former university. Snap photos of other monuments as you head to the west side of the square to admire gothic architecture in the Unitarian church and do some awesome window shopping at Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre housed in an atrium-style mall.

Right next to the mall is the tram station where you can take a quick ride to St. James Street and marvel at the brewing empire created by Arthur Guinness when he signed a long term (9,000 year) lease for this section of Dublin. Visit the interactive exhibits at the Guinness Storehouse as you work your way up to the 7th floor rotating Gravity Bar where you can enjoy a proper pint while admiring a 360° view of Dublin.

Afternoon

Lunch at Porterhouse.

After the brewery tour, hail a taxi to whisk you off to lunch at Porterhouse — Dublin’s oldest microbrewery pub. Housed in a rustic three-story wooden building loaded with charm, you can dig into classic Irish dishes and wash them down with hearty brews.

Luckily, you’re now in the neighborhood for some of the best vintage shopping in Dublin. Don’t miss the international favorite Dirty Fabulous, a decadently feminine resell boutique that ranges from gently used bridal gowns to elegant costume jewelry to jaunty hats for fair lassies. Further down the street is Past Times Dublin, a retro store featuring Art Nouveau classics and one-of-a-kind gifts you won’t find in any souvenir shop.

Evening

Once the sun begins to set on your first day in Dublin, it’s time to stash away your purchases, put on your finery and hit the hot spots to dance till you drop. Head back over to St. Stephen’s Green to get warmed up at Dandelion, a café/bar/club with gourmet quality bar food and early bird specials to get you in the groove. From there it’s a short walk to one of the hottest venues in town, the Button Factory where top talent performs live in a high-energy atmosphere that ranges from cool jazz to sizzling street rap. For a more traditional evening out, take a cab over to Howl at the Moon — Dublin’s four-story nightclub with stylish cocktail bars on all the floors and sophisticated tunes to match the gleaming dance floors.

Day Two

A morning cruise on the Liffey River.

Morning

After all activity on Day 1, you’ll no doubt need some high-octane refueling, so head to Avoca Café on Suffox Street for a healthy and revitalizing gourmet breakfast. Take the short walk across O’Connell Bridge to climb aboard a Liffey River Cruise to see many of Dublin’s historic sites conveniently clustered along the riverfront so you can comfortably admire them from your cozy climate-controlled boat cabin.

It’s wise to purchase the combination tickets for the Dublin Bus Tour so you can have a guide point out the fascinating landmarks, share ghost stories and recount local legends. With your 24 hour open ticket, you aren’t tied to a tour schedule so you can take your time browsing in fascinating stores like Cathach Rare Books and indulge even the pickiest sweet tooth at A Cupcake Store on Drury Street.

Afternoon

The archaeology section of the National Museum of Ireland.

Check out the street vendors for a delicious low-cost lunch and be on the lookout for neighborhood festivals and holiday celebrations — the Irish have a proclivity for turning any occasion into an open party with lots of food and drink. As the day wears on, head down Merrinon Square past the Oscar Wilde House to the National Gallery of Ireland to view the “Masterpieces from the Collection” in the Millennium Wing. Across the street are archaeology exhibits on Celtic and Early Christian lore at the National Museum of Ireland.

Evening

As dusk falls and your 48 hours in Dublin draws to a close, settle in at the Ely Wine Bar east of St. Stephens to pick from 400 wines to accompany an intimate dinner with a distinctive Irish flair. Around the corner is the Baggon Inn — where you can pull your own pint and chill in the heated smoking room or dance away your last hours in Dublin to local bands guaranteed to get your Irish up!
