Written by Luke of Charming Sardinia

Situated in the Mediterranean Sea between Italy, France, Spain and Africa, Sardinia has long been a strategic trading and service post for conquering empires. This means the island’s culture and goods are an intriguing hybrid of influences, making this proud autonomous region not just a great place for the tourist, beach goer, or hiker, but for the eager shopper as well.

While the bigger cities in Sardinia do have larger outdoor gallerias, the true heart of Sardinian commerce still takes place in traditional central markets called Mercato Civile. In the capital city of Cagliari, the northern city of Sassari, and the western city of Oristano, flea markets are especially well-frequented, attracting traditional Sardinian artisans from all over the region. Artistic pottery runs a plenty, as do woven baskets, ceramics and handmade woodcarvings. Every region of Sardinia will have its own specialty, so if you know you’re looking for, say, the perfectly hewn willow basket, it’s best to ask the locals where to go (hint: a little town near Sassari called Castelsardo).

Boutiques, which are often run out of the family home, carry very similar wares, though they are often a little more expensive. These smaller shops just can’t be beat when it comes to specialty pottery, which often has a Greek feel to it with blue and white coloring. The boutique scene is also quite strong when it comes to precious metal products like copperware, gold, and semi-precious stones. If you’re staying mainly in Cagliari, the best streets to check out are Largo Carlo Felice, Via Roma, Via Dante and Via Paoli. Jewelry fans might also consider taking a day trip to the little town of Isili – about an hour and a quarter northeast of Cagliari – to visit some of the region’s best known jewelry makers.

Even the smallest towns throughout Sardinia will have central markets and boutiques, so be on the lookout wherever you go. Outdoor flea markets tend to run on Sundays either every week (Cagliari) or the last Sunday of every month (Sassari). Boutiques keep more frequent hours, though Sardinians do love their relaxation and summer holidays, so don’t be taken off guard if a store is unexpectedly closed.

The most successful shoppers will be those ready and willing to hunt for the best products all across Sardinia, whether on foot, bike, bus, or car. Trenitalia runs trains between major cities like Sassari and Cagliari, and the bus and train company ARST operates both local and regional services at reasonable prices (though you’ll have to be patient, as the latter’s trains are known to be poky). Car rental is available through a number of companies, so it’s best to use a price comparison site to find the most affordable deal. If you’re really planning on shopping throughout most of the island, a car is definitely the best way to go so you can zip between many small towns. The main north-south highway, SS131, will take you from Cagliari to Sassari in a little over three hours, and it’s easy to stop at vibrant Oristano along the way.

Shopping in Sardinia is a true exploration. So get out there and have an adventure!

Luke is addicted to travelling and a blogger who works with Charming Sardinia http://www.charmingsardinia.com who are specialists in luxury holidays in Sardinia.

Written by Roshini Rajkumar

Airplane Etiquette 101

Use your indoor voice.

Be aware of how much you drink as to not get tipsy or drunk.

Share the armrest. The rule tends to be the passengers on the aisle and window each get one armrest; the poor soul in the middle gets two.

If you are on an aisle or window, lean that direction and give the person in the middle more breathing room.

When reclining your seat, do it slowly and gently as to not smash the person’s knees behind you. Remember that, although you want to be as comfortable as possible, the person behind you needs legroom as well.

Use headphone for electronic devices. People around you do not need to listen to your music or movie.

Store your carry-on above YOUR row. Do not grab the first overhead bin you see. That space belongs to someone else.

Dress comfortably, but appropriately. Remember you will be sitting next to strangers and they do not need to look at your cleavage the whole plane ride. Be freshly bathed and avoid strong perfumes and colognes.

Consider using the bathroom when other folks in your row are using it as well. Avoid making people get in and out of their seats several times.

The window shade is not a toy. Put it up or leave it down. Do not continue to play with it. If putting it down, ask others in your row they mind. Some passengers might need it open for a sense of calm and safety.

Cell phones should not be used on a plane. Games and other devices should only be used when deemed appropriate by airplane personnel and with headphones.

Do not bring food on the plane that will have a strong or lingering smell.

Wait until your row has arrived to leave the plane. There is no need to jump on and clog the aisles. Waiting patiently, in your seat, will make the deplaning process much easier.

Try your best not to be annoyed with kids on the plane. Parents are trying to best to make the plane ride as peaceful and as enjoyable as possible for both their child and for you.

Offer polite chitchat with your seatmate, but know when the conversation should end. If your seatmate is trying to read or waiting to work, give them the change to use the time how they would choose.

Carry your bag in front of you as you walk down the aisle. This will help you avoid hitting other passengers as you walk by them.

Don’t grab the seat in front of you when you are getting up from your seat. You will yank the seat back and bother the person in front of you.

When Traveling with Kids

Bring all the proper gear for feeding, napping, changing, soothing, etc. so their basic needs can always be met without leaving their seat.

Keep your kids busy. Make sure you bring enough activities to keep them happy.

Do not let them continue to kick the seat in front of them or continuously put up and bring down the tray table

Be prepared to entertain the entire way. This will not be a relaxing flight for you. You will not get to read your book or take a nap.

Written by Matthew Nunn

With over a thousand islands and in excess of 200 inhabited, it’s a small wonder there’s any Mediterranean Sea left. Despite what may be happening in Greece today (economically), nothing can take away what happened in Greece in the past. This history as well as the outstanding natural beauty has Greece tipped as one of the most popular travel destinations of 2012.

Despite being bound by a strong cultural and historical heritage, many people repeatedly return to Greece because of the variety offered by the different Greek Islands. This variety can range from traditional local dishes, ancient monuments, stunning cliffs and white sandy beaches. The Greek islands are clumped into various groups which span across several seas of the Mediterranean. Here’s a roundup of some of her islands and what they have to offer.

A harbor of Kos.

The Dodecanese Islands

Rhodes is the largest out of the Dodecanese Islands and is a great option if you want a one-stop holiday to a Greek island. You can get a real taster of all the best aspects to the Mediterranean here, so pack an appetite for the busy restaurant scene, swimsuit for the many bays and inquisitive mind for the historic architecture in the Old Town and the Palace of the Grand Master. For the daring there’s the Casino Rodas to gamble the night away.

Kos is one for the history fans. Archaeological wonders are scattered over the island that date all the way back to the 4th century, and this is also where Hippocrates operated. Kos provides some great urban days out, as it is famed for Kos city with its large squares and beautiful architecture.

Zakynthos' Navagio Bay.

The Ionian Islands

Corfu is another island known for its urban settings; Corfu town with a UNESCO World Heritage status is immensely popular and is an example of the parts of Greece influenced by the West. The city is extensive for an island and provides many opportunities for strolling down narrow cobbled lanes and checking out palaces and fine estates, or even the Venetian Citadel.

Zakynthos is primarily famous for Navagio Bay and its half buried ship wreck. This makes for a simply stunning photograph, but is also typical of the jagged cliffs that run along parts of the islands coastline. Zante (as much of the world calls this island) is also known for the various traditional festivals on the island as well as its wildlife, both flora and fauna, including the loggerhead turtle).

The Corinth Canal.

Peloponnese Peninsula (just off the mainland)

The Corinth Isthmus Canal now separates this Peninsula from the mainland of Greece, therefore making it technically an island. It is considerably larger than a traditional island holiday, so taking it all in will be virtually impossible. Ancient history runs deep here, with choices from Olympia, Mycenae and Argos in the North down to the south where many of the beaches are. This is a holiday for those who will also appreciate a strong fishing and agricultural heritage.

Night in Mykonos.

The Cyclades

Mykonos…if a volcano and black sands can’t tempt you here, perhaps the romantic reputation might. The bare hills, sandy beaches and white-washed houses create what for many is the typical scene of an amazing and picturesque Mediterranean holiday, explaining much of its popularity — especially as a honeymoon destination. This has all built up a reputation of tranquility, with a traditional fishing industry but also a sophisticated nightlife.

Santorini is actually a small group of islands which carries on the romantic reputation of Mykonos and is the supposed location of the lost city of Atlantis. It is formed on an active volcano and typifies much of the cliff lined coastlines of the Greek islands. The capital, Fira, occupies a commanding high spot on the island, and it’s not just the white buildings but the blue domed churches that steal the attention here.

The Samaria Gorge, a popular spot among hikers.

Crete

If you’re the sort of person who feels island holidays can be limiting for the adventurous, Crete will happily prove you wrong. The island contains many secluded villages as well as ancient Minoan Palaces such as Knossas, however the natural scenery also steps up to the plate. Crete is full of bold landscapes, hitting peaks and troughs with mountains and gorges respectively. For expert hikers, there is the challenging E4 long distance walking path that offers little help in the way of signs or terrain.

This is not to say it is all action-packed. There are many luxury hotels on the island as well as numerous harbors for those looking for a relaxing holiday.

All in all, the islands of Greece create a myriad of opportunities for holidays, and can cater to a variety of tourists and travellers. Lone adventurists, beach dwellers and families will all find something for themselves here, and that’s all without even considering mainland Greece.

When booking a romantic Valentine’s getaway for that special someone, you may initially consider conventional destinations such as Paris, Rome, or Venice. There’s no doubt that these old faithful’s tick all the right boxes for an intimate weekend away, but have you contemplated Budapest? Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Budapest remains to be an untapped treasure for even the most seasoned city break traveller. Check out these heart-warming, romantic activities available in Budapest, sure to make your Valentine’s break a truly memorable occasion.

1. Soak in the sights with a Danube River Cruise – The River Danube meanders through the heart of the city, separating the once provincial towns of Buda and Pest. Treat your partner to a relaxing river cruise, which will see you gliding past many of Budapest’s magnificent waterside landmarks, including Hungarian Parliament, Matthias Church and Chain Bridge. Turn up the heat by choosing an evening cruise, with a romantic 4 course dinner included, and often live music.

2. Wine tasting at Buda Castle – For the perfect excuse to cuddle close to your loved one, visit the labyrinth of underground corridors and tunnels that lie in the depths of Buda Castle. Originally carved as a hide out during the middle ages, this basement is now used as a wine cellar, and those who dare to descend can participate in a wine tasting tour, and explore the history behind the tunnels. Connoisseurs will introduce a selection of Hungarian fine wines and champagnes to sample.

3. Indulge in a thermal bath – Budapest is renowned for its thermal bath houses, which are believed to have healing and therapeutic abilities, due to the highly sulphuric water. Win some serious brownie points with that special someone, by treating them to a visit to the Gellert Hotel and Baths, which is arguably the most attractive bath house in the city. The baths are a stunning representation of Neo-classical architecture, surrounded by marble colonnades, and stain glass windows and ceilings, making it a romantic location indeed.

4. A fairy-tale in Fisherman’s Bastion – An unmissable piece of architecture along the Budapest cityscape, Fisherman’s Bastion is a combination of exquisite Neo-gothic parapets, turrets and cascading staircases. The terrace is located at the summit of Castle Hill, offering breath-taking, panoramic views of Budapest. Standing within the grounds of this enchanting building, you will feel as if you have been swept into a fairy-tale land, gazing over the rest of the kingdom.

5. Stroll around Margaret Island – Escape to the tranquil hideaway of Margaret Island, located in the centre of the River Danube, spanning 2km in length. This luscious parkland is well maintained, with landscaped parks, pristine lawns and flowerbeds. You won’t be disturbed by engine noise or traffic, as the island is a pedestrian only oasis. You may however, see the odd horse-drawn carriage trotting by. Stroll around hand-in-hand and marvel at the historic monuments, fountains and medieval ruins that adorn the island, and enjoy a drink or meal together at one of the island’s bars or restaurants.

To compliment your romantic break in Budapest, why not book a self-catering Budapest apartment, and enjoy the privacy of your own space.

For those that like to travel the world, learning second or third languages is often a must if they wish to easily assimilate into new cultures. Knowing the national language of any country you visit, whether it be Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, or Swahili, makes getting around a country much easier and opens you up to further cultural experiences that you would have otherwise missed – such as finding that great hole-in-the-wall pub or that landing for a better view of natural scenery.

However, learning another language isn’t always easy or inexpensive. To learn another language in a classroom setting, you can expect to pay several hundred dollars and be forced to learn at a slower pace over the course of several weeks. If you choose to purchase software to learn a language, such as Rosetta Stone, you could find yourself spending a couple hundred dollars each time you needed to increase your learning level from novice to intermediate to advanced to fluent. Neither of these options are ideal for travelers wishing to spend more time traveling and their money on local foods and sightseeing.

So if you plan on traveling to a country that doesn’t speak your language in the near future, consider checking out some of the following free accredited online language courses to help you brush up on your language skills:

BBC Languages

BBC Languages offers a wide array of learning courses and appeals to various types of learners. In addition to basics like French, Spanish, Italian, and German, the site also offer audio and video courses in Greek, Chinese, and Portuguese, as well as mini lessons on countless others. If you find that one of the main languages covered isn’t the one you are looking for, BBC Languages also offers several other mini tutorials that will give you enough vocab to get by in numerous other countries whether it be Bulgaria or Hungary. The BBC Languages site is by far one of the most interactive free learning resources, and is definitely worth taking advantage of – even if you just need to brush up.

MIT

For those interested in learning French, German, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese, MIT offers several courses to help you obtain the language skills you desire. Set up much like an online college course, MIT’s language courses are offered in series of I-III or higher, and cover everything from language to customs and histories. So if you want a little more than just a language course, consider looking into MIT’s online language learning resources for a more comprehensive learning experience.

My Language Exchange

My Language Exchange is a unique and incredibly valuable online language learning resource because it actually lets you practice the language you would like to learn with a native speaker – for free. Normally, you have to pay a substantial amount of money for a private tutor, and with My Language Exchange, you get the same kind of learning experience without the high price. Not only that, but you also will be more likely to learn relevant slang terms that will help your get by in whatever country you are interested in visiting.

Users should note, however, that not all languages are easy to come by on the site. While My Language Exchange tries to do a good job finding a partner for everyone, more remote or less mobile countries aren’t going to have the same level of connectivity for obvious reasons. So finding someone to practice your Spanish or French with might be easier than finding someone to practice your Swahili with.

The Internet is full of online learning opportunities for the traveler – even those of us that like to keep our budgets low. So if you are looking to travel abroad, don’t simply buy a translation dictionary and hope for the best. Go to one of the several online language learning resources to learn some basic vocabulary – not only will the locals appreciate it, but you’ll be able to enjoy your travels a bit more too.

Whenever I travel somewhere with a beach, it’s the first place I seek out.

Few things are more calming and inspiring than the ocean. Days spent at the beach equal a sense of rejuvenation, an abundance of exciting activities, and, often, natural souvenirs in the form of shells, sand, rocks or driftwood. From the rocky shores of the Mediterranean to the crystal-white soft sands of the Caribbean, visiting seaside locales around the world has been a lifelong passion. In addition to offering me unparalleled experiences such as snorkeling, surfing and scuba diving, I have a plethora of natural treasures to show off – sea shells. Shells are widely collected and prided around the world. Some of the best beaches here in the United States are places I visit again and again to bolster my collection.

Waikiki Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

Waikiki may be a tourist magnet, but it’s an all-around fabulous beach for many reasons. White sand, year-round reliable waves, safe swimming and an abundance of shells ready to swoop up make it one of my favorite beaches to visit. Conveniently located just a short walk from hundreds of Oahu hotels, restaurants and shopping, shelling at Waikiki can be an easy activity worked into the rest of your day. Since Hawaii is the only exotic tropical destination unlike anywhere else in the United States, it offers beautiful, rare shells perfect for jewelry and decorations.

Glass Beach, Kauai

The shoreline of glass beach is covered with millions of pieces of colorful sea glass, which takes about 10 to 30 years to be created, and serves as a lovely piece of ocean-made art. Found all over the world, the abundance of sea glass at this Kauai beach is possible because of broken bottles and auto glass dumped years ago on the western end of Kauai near Port Allen Harbor. The glittering beach is also nearby numerous Hawaii hotels and resorts, so you can easily take a jaunt out to collect to your heart’s content without having to spend the entire day getting there.

Marco Island, Florida

Revered as one of the best shell-collecting beaches in the world, Marco Island is the largest island within Southwest Florida’s islands. The Gulf Coast offers far superior selection of sea treasures than any other United States beach. Sparkling white sand, incredible weather and shallow, calm waters facilitate the ideal sea-shell collecting experience.

Stinson Beach, Northern California

One of my go-to spots for its close proximity to my hometown of San Francisco and stunning natural beauty, Stinson Beach has a great selection of sea goods for the northern west coast. Sand dollars, beautiful, multicolored rocks and limpet shells are all easily found on this 3.5-mile stretch. Accessed by scenic Highway One, the trip out to Stinson Beach only adds to the allure of this Northern California gem located within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Although Alaska is part of the United States, it can seem like an entirely different country due to the extreme weather conditions, stunning natural scenery and remote location. It is an incredibly unique state, home to the country’s tallest peaks as well as some of the most breathtaking views. Many people agree that the best way to see the area is with an Alaska cruise. Not only will a cruise allow passengers to see the major sites around Alaska in one trip, but there is no risk of getting lost in the vast state, or having to spend hours traveling in a car or train to get around. Instead, you get to travel in luxury in a top cruise ship, enjoying the changing scenery from the comfort of your room. Here are some of the best destinations to consider on your Virgin last minute cruise to Alaska.

Ketchikan: This Alaskan city is often the first port of call for cruises heading north into Alaska. Although fewer than 15,000 people live in Ketchikan, close to one million passengers disembark to explore the town each year. There is a historic downtown area, where such landmarks as the Tribal Fish Hatchery, Saxman Totem Park and the Totem Bight State Historical Park can be found. There are several museums worth a visit as well, including the Tongass Historical Museum and the Totem Heritage Centre. Both serve as a great way to familiarize visitors with the native Alaskan culture and population. Of course, the dining is phenomenal with local specialities.

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve: This is without a doubt one of the most scenic locations in Alaska. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is recognized for the incredible beauty of the glaciers. Along with the peaks reaching up 15,000 feet and capped in snow, there are ponds, lakes, rivers and estuaries which only add to the area’s appeal. There are some options for onshore activity, including hiking and kayaking in the summer months.

Dutch Harbour: This town is found in the Aleutian Islands in Southern Alaska, and is more than just a beautiful destination on a cruise. It also boasts an incredibly rich history, and is home to several historical landmarks. During World War II, the town built giant fortresses to protect against any potential attacks. Together, they are known as the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area, which is the main site within the town.

Seward: This Alaskan town often serves as the final port of call for an Alaskan cruise. It is a vibrant town, with an emphasis on outdoor activity like kayaking, sailing and glacier cruises around the area.

If you prefer something completely different such as a luxury celebrity cruise, visit Virgin Holidays Cruises for great deals!

As pets have evolved more and more into full-fledged members of the family, owners have begun including their four-legged friends in travel plans. And that means flying.

Airlines have adjusted their policies, too, allowing for pets to travel in cabins with their owners in most cases, provided the animal is small enough to fit in a pet carrier. While a 150-pound Mastiff or 75-pound Lab obviously won’t qualify, most small dogs and cats will.

To ensure a safe flight, it’s important that owners recognize the health needs of their pets – those that are especially important 35,000 feet in the air.

Here are some guidelines to help both your pets and you to fly comfortably.

All set for take-off.

Before You Fly:

Choose direct flights to minimize the time your pet is traveling.

If you’re flying during winter or summer months, be sure that both the hold of the plane and the cargo facilities at the airport are climate controlled. Ask the airline if you need to get an acclimation certificate from your vet, showing that your animal is cleared to fly in temperatures lower than 45 F.

Make sure your pet is adequately insured and that the policy covers travel. If you don’t have insurance coverage for your friend, consider getting it.

Be aware of destination-specific restrictions. Hawaii, for instance, is a rabies-free state and therefore requires animals be quarantined for up to 120 days upon arrival.

Preparation:

Though individual airlines’ requirements vary, a few guidelines are universal:

Per Federal Aviation Administration regulations, the pet carrier must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you, allowing for other passengers to easily reach the aisle.

Your animal must be at least eight-weeks old and fully weaned, as required by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Make sure to choose a carrier large enough for your pet to stand up and turn around; one that fits your airline’s size requirements.

For dogs, have a collar and leash handy to walk your pet once deplaned.

Each crate should contain separate bowls for water and food, accessible from the inside (Tip: It’s also a good idea to keep an extra serving or two of food in a bag taped to the top of the carrier in case of any delays, along with a notice asking for your pet to be fed by a certain time if you’re delayed in picking it up.)

Write the words “Live Animal” in letters at least one inch in height on the sides and top of the carrier, along with arrows indicating the top of the crate.

Make two copies of all necessary documentation, including your home and travel contact information and your pet’s name. Also include a recent photo of your friend to have in the rare event that they escape or go missing. Keep one set of copies for yourself, and place the other set in an envelope securely taped to the top of the crate.

Health:

Check with your vet to make sure your animal cleared to fly and that all vaccinations are current, and carry a copy of the updated health certificate with you. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recommends that the certificate be dated no more than 10 days prior to travel.

If your animal has pet health insurance, make sure it’s current, and have a copy of the insurance card or member information with you, as well as attached to the pet carrier. Also, make sure it covers international travel before leaving the States.

Sedation is discouraged, since sedatives and high altitudes can be a deadly combination. Some airlines will refuse to fly a sedated animal.

The Humane Society of the United States recommends that you not feed your pet for four to six hours before traveling, though it’s crucial to provide water in a spill-proof bowl.

Traveling around the world on a budget? If one of your stops is Rio de Janeiro, I’ve got the places for you! The marvelous city has become very expensive for the common traveler. So during a short stay in Rio last year, I was on a mission to find affordable and cool places in town.

Mission accomplished. I found two great hostel options in the upscale and trendy neighborhood of Leblon. However, before making any pre-judgment, I booked a stay in both places to get an in-depth opinion of each establishment.

Lounge at Z.Bra. Photo: Brazilian Guru

First stop, Z. Bra hostel. This place is located on Av. General San Martin only one block away from the beach. The hostel offers a very modern atmosphere with neon colored sofas, tables and chairs in the lounge area, and purple capsule-looking bunk beds in the rooms. The staff is very friendly and super keen on sharing local tips of their home city. One thing that really differentiated this hostel from others is the individual bathrooms, each one has a toilet and shower so you can close the door and have some privacy. The prices start at R$41, and includes a tasty breakfast of toast, coffee, jam and cheese.

Z.Bra website: z.brahostel.com

Common room in Leblon Spot. Photo: Brazilian Guru

Next Leblon Spot. Here I felt truly at home. While the other hostel is more targeted to the young party crowd, here the architecture is composed of wooden furniture and a large living room with white sofas and a flat screen TV. In the common area, there is an American style kitchen with large counters, which makes breakfast all the more sociable. The rooms are simple, white walls and bunk beds. The bathrooms are in locker room style, however everything is very clean. The location is a little further away from the beach on Rua Dias Ferreira, which is where all the best bars are located. Prices start at R$55 a person.

Leblon Spot website: leblonspot.com

Aside from the awesome price, these two spots are great places to meet cool travelers with great stories to tell. I know I did, and they are my friends to this day!

The Makgadikgadi Pans in Botswana might be familiar to viewers of the BBC TV motoring programme Top Gear. During a 2007 edition of the show, presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May became the first people to cross the Makgadikgadi by car. This was no mean feat as the pans are remnants of an inland sea and heavy vehicles tend to sink below the muddy surfaces and salty crusts found in the area.

It was a good job that the three drivers didn’t make their record-breaking attempt from December to March as this is the time when the rains come and the pans fill up with water. The rains attract water-reliant migrating wildlife such as wildebeest, gemsbok and springbok.

African safari specialists Safari Consultants offer tailor-made holidays across Africa to places including Makgadikgadi Pans. Botswana Safaris offer the chance to see the pans’ water birds; including flamingos and pelicans.

Zebra, Botswana’s national animal, also visit the pans – the environment is the perfect habitat for the species (the Plains Zebra) which come to the plains.

While the Plains zebra are the most common in Africa, there are also two other species: the mountain zebra and Grévy’s zebra. Both species are currently under threat of extinction with the Grévy’s population dropping as low as 3,000 at the turn of the 21st century.

Botswana is not the only place travellers can expect to find the Plains Zebra. Those embarking on a Zambia safari would be advised to explore the game-rich Luangwa Valley for a chance to see these animals up close.

Appearance

The Plains Zebra is smaller than the other two zebra species but, in common with all zebras, have bold black and white stripes. No two zebras ever look identical – the stripes are as unique a form of identification as human fingerprints are but it can take a little effort to distinguish between zebra; when a zebra is born the mother keeps the foal concealed from other zebras until she has memorised the patterns.

Diet

Water and grass are essential to the zebra’s existence. They will migrate up to 700 miles to find the best grass and water and are often the first grazing species to appear in a well-vegetated area. The zebra is also a pioneer grazer; without them eating longer grass, animals like blue wildebeest would not have such easy access to the shorter and more nutritional grasses.

Harems

A family group of zebra is called a harem and usually consists of a single stallion, several mares and their recent offspring. There are also larger groups of male bachelor zebras roaming the pans in groups of up to 15 members.

These bachelors are not yet old or savvy enough to form their own harem; when they are they will try and abduct a mare from an existing harem.

It is the job of the mare’s harem leader (normally her father) to chase off or fight these bachelor stallion suitors.

Cunningly, a stallion will often remain still on the ground during a fight – in an imitation of surrender – before suddenly getting up and surprising their opponent.

Not that life is all fighting between harems and bachelor groups – zebra often join together to form a herd and it is highly unusual for a healthy stallion to have their position as harem leader usurped.

Foals

The rainy season is the time when most foals are born. When a foal takes its first steps – which, in common with horses, is very soon after it is born – the mother, as explained earlier, shields the new-born from other zebra.

This behaviour might seem highly atypical as zebra are extremely social but it is not long before order is restored as the new addition bonds with the rest of its new extended family.

Written by Graham Padmore

Despite having all the usual seaside clichés of pier, fairground rides and candyfloss, Brighton has a very different side. Dubbed ‘London by the sea’, this hip and happening city continues to surprise and intrigue visitors who flock here for independent shops, award winning food, friendly locals and a thriving art and alternative scene. For hipsters everywhere, here are seven reasons to visit the coolest seaside city in England.

1. The boutique shopping

Brighton has its fair share of the usual big name brands but it’s the variety of small, independent outlets that really makes Brighton a haven for those with money to burn. The fashionable ‘Laines’ is a good place to start. The half a square mile area is home to over 300 unique shops – the largest selection of independent retailers on the South Coast. Ty the North Laines for everything from vintage designer wear to dusty records and wander the more picturesque South Laines for bespoke jewellery and trinkitry from every corner of the globe.

2. The cafés and restaurants

The bohemian atmosphere of this city-by-the-sea is reflected in some of the cafes and restaurants on offer. Forget fish and chips on the pier (although there are plenty), Brighton is also home to a hearty clutch of vegetarian, vegan and organic eateries, many of which have several awards to their names. Head for Kensington Gardens in the North Laines for a choice of laid back coffee shops where you can stop and people watch for a while.

3. The alternative music scene

The birthplace of the ‘big beat’ music genre, and home to DJ and music producer Fatboy Slim, Brighton has a thriving music scene. From the Big Beach Boutique open-air dance nights (which attract thousands) to the many intimate venues and rooms above pubs, this city has hundreds of places to see great local acts and big touring bands. Other famous local bands originating from Brighton include British Sea Power and The Kooks.

4. It has a love of art and design

Another of Brighton’s obvious strengths is its nurturing of artistic talent. Artists, designers, painters and all manor of creatives are based here, and the city offers plenty of chances to see some of their work. The annual Brighton Festival in May is a three-week celebration of all things arty, and attracts over 300,000 people a year. The Artists Open House scheme sees Brighton residents opening their doors to the public, where they are able to buy works of art directly from the artist.

5. The cool boutique hotels

Brighton’s old reputation as a place for a dirty weekend by the sea has changed somewhat, and it is now home to some of the UK’s best boutique and design hotels. The Myhotel – described as “where Freddie Mercury meets the Maharishi” – is an ultra modern, almost futuristic hotel in the centre of the city, while Hotel Pelirocco is a saucy rock ‘n roll retreat with themed rooms, individually styled by artists. Check in to the Play Room suite for an 8ft round bed, a plunge bath, and a burlesque-style pole dancing area.

6. Its open-minded outlook

Brighton has always embraced all cultural scenes and sub-cultures. With a bohemian air, the city is a very accepting place. Home to a thriving gay and lesbian scene, Brightonians and visitors are free to express themselves. The annual summer Pride Parade attracts a huge crowd to the city, and there is no shortage of welcoming pubs, clubs and hotels.

7. It’s one of the greenest cities in the UK

Voted the green capital of Britain, Brighton wears its Green credentials for all to see. The city is home to one the largest population of vegetarians in the country and is the first and the only borough in the country to have elected a Green Party MP, making political history.
Ski resort holidays are always popular over the festive period among holidaymakers and ardent skiers alike, providing the perfect location to celebrate Christmas and welcoming the New Year in style. These events might be over, but there is still huge opportunity to hit the slopes and take advantage of the fresh snow. What’s more, there is no need to worry about booking your ski trip in advance, as there is still an impressive range of last minute ski holidays available from sites such as Teletext Holidays — just waiting to be explored.

If you feel overwhelmed by the wealth of last minute deals out there, here is four top-rated ski destinations to inspire you:

Soldeu, Andorra

Are you a beginner and want to learn the ropes on some of the best nursery slopes around? Soldeu is the place for you. Great for families holidaying on a budget, Soldeu boasts beautiful scenery and the vast majority of ski instructors are native English speakers.

For more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldeu

Courmayeur, Italy

If you are a fan of the après ski as much as the slopes – and let’s face it, who isn’t – you may find the bustling restaurants and bars of Courmayeur hit the spot. Let your taste buds get swept up in the decadent cuisine on offer at the resort, including gourmet food and polenta.

For more info see http://www.courmayeur-montblanc.com/en/

Flaine, France

With its safe environment for children, Flaine is the perfect resort to take the little ones to learn new skills that they will hopefully take with them into adulthood, and perhaps even pass on to their own children. What’s more, there are games rooms aplenty to keep them entertained after a day on the slopes when you want to kick back and relax.

For more info see http://www.flaine.com/en/winter/index.htm

Morzine, France

If skis aren’t your primary apparatus on the slopes, then you might be interested to know that Morzine is often rated the best resort for avid snowboarders. This resort may have a traditional charm about it, but is also known for its vibrant personality. There aren’t many ski resorts that can claim they have ice-climbing, hot-air balloons and helicopter rides.

Morzine also features some great beginner runs known as “The Super Morzine”. These runs are wide, easily accessible and great fun for everyone travelling down them.

It would be unwise to believe the misconception that last minute holidays significantly reduce your holiday options, as the facts show your position is quite the contrary – you really are spoilt for choice. Get out there and feel free to come back and let us how it went.

Written by Rufus Elliott

Last summer I decided to fulfill a dream of travelling to Indonesia. The motivation was simple; Komodo Dragons. At one of the far reaches of the earth sits the islands of Komodo and Rinca, the two last places on earth that these prehistoric creatures can be found in the wild. The islands are sandwiched between Flores and Sumbawa in the South East of Indonesia.

After days of travel we arrived at the island of Flores, the launch pad for everything in Komodo National Park. We rented a room and hired a boat for the following day. Our destination; Rinca!

After a sleepless night, the excitement was too much; we rose early and set off through the astonishingly beautiful Komodo National Park. The whole environment looks alien because it is so volcanic. After a few hours we reached a rickety wooden jetty and began our trek to the village; a dragon hotspot. It seems these creatures have formed an uneasy truce; if they are fed regularly they remain docile otherwise accidents do happen! Only a few months previously a dragon had entered one of the huts and bitten one of the guides. Now this isn’t to say this can’t happen because you’re free to roam these islands at your leisure, with a guide. There are no cages and no fences so you could say it’s like safari but without the jeep. That’s what makes it even more special, that element of danger, though our guide assured us attacks are beyond rare.

As we made our way past large reptilian footprints, etched in the mud, volcanic mud bubbled all around. This really felt like a land before time. We reached a hut, registered our arrival, paid the obligatory donation to keep these islands protected, and we’re given a guide.

Thirty feet ahead our first dragon came into sight. Peering at us through the bushes it studied us for a minute then seemed to lose interest and walked off. The same can’t be said for us; we were ecstatic! Days upon days of travelling had brought us to their domain but not a single guide could promise we would even see one. Over the next 2 hours we saw 17 which is apparently a record. Either way, if I had just seen one I would have been happy because every single dragon was magnificent. They range from a few feet all the way to the gigantic 7 footers — an awe-inspiring sight, it really is like looking at a living dinosaur and at a creature that wouldn’t look out of place in a natural history museum.

Despite the expense and substantial stress that travelling through Indonesia generates (a two day journey takes four to five days, there is no concept of personal space and people seem more concerned with taking photos of westerners than thousand year old temples), I would do it all again with no hesitation. Indonesia is wonderful place. If you enjoy exploring in the true sense of the word, you enjoy rare creatures and you want to be one of what can only be a few thousand people, if that, to see these creatures in the wild, then this is a trip you cannot afford to miss!
