Free Your Soul
“The soul should always stand ajar, ready to welcome the ecstatic experience.” — Emily Dickinson
“Free your soul?”
The woman selling handmade jewelry by the road side in Greenwich Village read the text on my tank top.
“Free your soul? How do you do that?”
I wish I can remember what I answered and the dialogue that followed.
Later, a cashier asked the same thing, as did other people I met in Manhattan throughout the day.
Have you ever worn a clothing item with a thought provoking or inspiring message that caused someone to strike up a conversation with you?
What we wear can truly act as great conversation openers.

Thanks for posting this Erica. In 2000, I designed my shirts to be thought provoking, a affirmation for yourself and a statement for others as they read your shirt. People are always checking you out on the street. I wanted to design shirts that evoke positive statement. “I Love your hair too” is what I get when I where my “I Love My Hair” shirt. With the “Free Your Soul” design, people usually repeat what they see. What is means to me and someone else is always different but it always remind me that I have it on let’s me know people are taking notice.
Hi Kissa, You did an amazing job with the designs. It’s fun when you get a positive response from people on the street. Whenever I’m next in NYC, I want to buy an “I Love My Hair” shirt and another one of your signature tanks (http://www.buttaflyunltd.com/BTCOLL/BT_popcoll/BT_fys_tak_brn.html). I LOVE the description: “will inspire you and those around you to ‘free your soul’, create moments and live life to the fullest.” And, like you said, every person has their own interpretation of the message.
Thanks for your comment!
