Go to the Highest Point

When arriving in a new city, aim to reach the highest point. Apart from a great view, in some cases this means you will also get away from the touristy side of a place and explore an area not many visitors have the chance to experience.

Lucerne by Viervaldstätter See in central Switzerland was crowded with tourists during our stopover, especially the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke). This wooden bridge stands on wooden pillars in the water and its high water tower is probably the most photographed monument in the city. If you like the idea of escaping the crowds for a while, follow Mariahilfgasse from the the old town and walk uphill for about twenty minutes. You will get a terrific view over Lucerne and the lake.

Definitely my favorite thing to do when I visit a new city. What’s your favorite “highest point”?

Well, it’s probably the Basilia of Notre-Dame de Fourviere in Lyon, but the Greek islands also have many beautiful high points.

Not a fan of the urban skyscrapers? i.e. the towers in NYC, Chicago, Sydney, etc.?

Of course, those are also among my favourites. It’s difficult to choose one over the others.
