@Adriana, Volunteering in 7 countries for 6 months and staying with 19 host families does sound like an amazing experience. Travelers who ONLY stay in hotels when abroad often miss out on a lot.

I love that he mentions that it is through people that we relate to a place. After volunteering for 6 months in 7 countries, staying with 19 different host families, I truly realized what Joel is saying. It was all about the people.
