just back from a 2 night stay at the Andaman Resort. Pleasant stay, the usual Thai courtesy with one big issue. Did anyone realize that the noise those long tail boats make as they pass by. Head to castaway resort, it's a pulling paradise. I brought my g friend so it didn't matter staying at Andaman. Also watch out when you're out snorke ling as those boats do not observe any rules whatsoever. Most of these boats will criss cross obvious snorkeling sites. As a matter of fact my boat heading to the resort crash landed into the rocks with 9 other tourists and a whole load of luggage. I got to give credit to the boat constructn tho, it didn't even leak. If it was a bus or van with an impact like that, the damage would be apparent. Yep probably it's my luck, but if it happens to you and I hope it doesn't, ... You were warned. I still remember what all of us were thinking when that boat crashed...... We thought it was all part of the Thai hospitality.

Castaway Resort in Ko Lipe Thailand has to be one of the nicest chalets I have seen in a very long time. The unique concept of double storey wooden chalets definitely made a impression when I was walking along the well known Sunrise Beach here

I've been going to Koh Lipe for the past 6 years, and I've probably spent more than two years working there. It is without doubt a unique Thai island, made all the more special by the local people who live there - the Chao Ley (Sea Gypsies). I know the island as well as any westerner and now organise tours there. True, the island has developed in a negative way. If you want to do your bit, only do business with the locals.

Maybe a good suggestion. This year I’ve been to the island of Koh Lipe in Thailand. This island is located 70km off the Andaman (west) coast of Thailand's most southwestern province, Satun Province and shines out among some of Thailand's most beautiful, and unforgettable environments.

I had a great time on Lipe and there was a lot to do like snorkeling, shopping and eating in good quality restaurants and bars. I found my resort on Koh Lipe on http://www.welovekohlipe.com, where you can also check out more information about Koh Lipe and the surrounding areas. I can really recommend Koh Lipe for a nice relaxing holiday in paradise!

Look's amazing as always. Glad that all the unrest has started to calm down over there. It's doubtful that the next election will settle things, but here's hoping.

I recently read in a Swedish travel magazine about Koh Kradan, an island with no roads or cars, not even a supermarket - just one stand by the beach where you can buy drinks and chips. There's a small resort/restaurant in the middle of the jungle called Paradise Lost that sounded good, as well as the more expensive Kradan Beach Resort.

You'll get to the island by taking a taxi to Koh Muk Pier from Krabi, then boat. Might be worth a visit before it gets too commericalized. :)

Yep, Lipe jumped the shark sometime in the last 18 months. Shame really but it is just following the cycle that all the great Thai islands are following/followed. When the folks with money realize they can score big, they move in and over commercialize the place until its just too much. That combined with word getting out on the 'net from travel forums and bloggers and these places don't stand a chance. We've been 3 times since 2005 and were blown away this year by how much it had grown/commercialized.

Now its time to find the next one... :-)

@Cheryl, I couldn't agree more. A Thai island surrounded by clear, blue water is not a destination you would want to leave in the first place.

@May, Forra. I will keep that in mind if I ever find myself on Lipe in the future. Thanks for your great tips!

God I miss this place! We stayed at Forra (next to Castaway and less of a thai beachbar cliche) and the vibe was brilliant.

Lipe is no longer the well-kept travelers' secret that it used to be, but it's still a long way from the likes of Phi Phi, Samui, Krabi, et al.

If anyone's planning to go, try talking one of the local boatmen into taking you for a day-trip around the nearby islands. Then you get the beach all to yourself, and crazy, clear warm waters to swim in for hours.

Tip: at peak season they don't really bother with non-divers so you are going to have to convince them to give you room to stay

The islands around this area are truly beautiful. The waters as blue and clear as the pictures show.
