When preparing for a trip, you ideally want to pack as light as possible and make the most out of the space in your luggage. This holds especially true for backpacking and any outdoor tours where you carry all your stuff throughout, or most of, the day. An item that can add unnecessary weight to your luggage is that large cotton towel you might use to bring.
During a ’99 Appalachian Trail hike, avid long distance hiker George Wheeler got the idea for Lightload Towels, quick-drying, multipurpose towels aimed towards fellow hikers, campers, outdoor enthusiasts and travelers. Thanks to Mr. Wheeler, I received a few review samples of these towels.
The towels come in different sizes. The Beach Towel (at $7.95) is 36 x 60 inches (90 x 150cm). Suitable for indoor and outdoor activities, it’s super absorbant with many functions. Apparently, it’s the only beach towel that can fit easily in your pocket. I tested this model last year and found it easy to use (water softens the towel), practical and quick-drying, as promised, but wasn’t too fond of the material (100% viscose). I missed that cosy feeling a thick, cotton towel can provide.
The smaller version of Lightload Towels at $5.95 is 12 x 24 inches (30 x 60cm) and comes in a three-pack with waterproof packaging.
While I wouldn’t hesitate to use the lightload towels as firestarters, bug repellent and insulation, or in first-aid kits and camping equipment (as many people have done before me), I wouldn’t use them again as towels (because, in my opinion, comfort beats convenience). And their look with a big logo on the front makes it very unlikely that I’d be seen with any of these on a beach, but for outdoor purposes, sure! I passed on a few of these to my parents for their kayaking trips and they totally loved them. I can see why they’re so brilliant in the outdoors.
If you’re planning to use the towel as a survival tool or don’t mind giving up comfort and style over usefulness and price, I do recommend Lightload Towels. Watch the video below to hear about their many functions.
