The peacefulness of driving on your own.

Rural scenery in the community of Margaree on the Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia.
The curiosity of wondering what’s around the next corner.

No distracting cars allow you to take in all of the landscape.

The sense of freedom.

Speed limit sign on a golf course in Missouri
You can relax and drive as slowly as you like.

The excitement of not knowing what’s ahead of you.

You can drive above the speed limit.
I know exactly what you mean. Last year I drove up to Jasper from Vancouver. Empty roads for long stretches and beautiful scenery. If you’ve never been I’d recommend it. Do you know of any other beautiful drives like that?
I would love to visit Jasper. I recently published a guest post on beautiful road trips http://www.travelblissful.com/unmissable-road-trips/ (Haven’t driven them myself yet.) My personal favourites (so far!) are the drives from Grenoble to La Grave in France, along Lake Geneva, and around Chamonix in the French Alps.
Awesome pictures… I think it has been a while since I have actually relaxed and enjoyed the surroundings during a drive. Usually I have about 20 things going on in my head on the phone, etc…
Driving becomes so much more pleasant when you can relax. Not always easy though. Music sometimes help.
Excellent ;looks like you drove by my place on the Cabot Trail. Hope you’ll return.
I didn’t take the photos above myself. For these “Why I Love” posts I generally use pictures by other photographers. Hope to visit Nova Scotia in the future though.
oops, had to check the Notify block
Nice shot! =) Love empty roads too – when it’s just you and nature!

Exactly. It’s a great feeling!
It’s the best after sitting in a bit of traffic to see nothing but road a ahead of you.

And especially if you’ve been sitting in one of those traffic jams when there’s at least someone who can’t stop tooting or shouting… The calm after the “storm” so to speak.
Awesome pictures! I love to drive without traffic in this kind of roads too!
No traffic is preferable!
I love open empty roads as long as there is variety in the terrain, some winding bends with tight corners and freaky drop offs, and the occassional hill climbs. I have ADHD with constant flatness.
Beautiful images Erica.

I LOVE the sound of that! A bit of excitement while driving. And I can see what you mean about constant flatness. Those distances often require some distraction – music, conversations, games… Reminds me of a great post I read on the Tripbase blog http://www.tripbase.com/blog/55-ways-to-enjoy-a-long-car-ride/
I’d happily be in any of those places right now.
Same here, Brian.
i love empty roads. gorgeous shots.

Thanks for stopping by, Kari.
Brilliant photo essay! If you were trying to make me long for the open road, you were successful!
I’ve got a great road trip planned for this summer. I’m heading home to Ottawa, Canada for a visit, and then I’ll be flying to Calgary to meet up with a friend. From there, we’ll be driving to Smithers B.C. for a wedding. I can’t tell you how much the thought of a Canadian road trip excites me. It’s been so long. I’m itching to get back to my roots.

Thank you, Carrie. Your Canadian road trip sounds like an adventure. I hope you had/are having a great time back home!
I loved the essay and it makes me even nore excited as I’m off to Jasper tomorrow from Vancouver so providing a blizzard doesn’t roll in it should be great fun.
Another favourite drive of mine, especially towards dusk,is the road heading from Grand Junction, Colorado west through Utah. There are a few hours of driving in there that are memorable. The backroad south towards Moab (Hwy 128) is always empty and a fun and extremely scenic drive.

Hi Leigh,
Jasper-Vancouver is a route I’d love to drive myself. Hope you had fun! I just looked up the other drive on Google maps. Have you been to Arches National Park? Now I’m curious about that drive as well.
Great photo essay…
Thanks, Eric.
Tell it like it is sister. Not too many of them left it seems.
Let’s make a list of the best empty roads in the world.
You have quite a collection of beautiful pictures here! I am actually planning on a cross country road trip soon, and look forward to experiencing and seeing some beautiful empty roads! Haha, Thanks for the post!

Not a collection I can take credit for, I’m afraid. So, how was your cross country road trip?
Another evocative photo essay on Travel Blissful that resonates with me! Thanks so much! My all-time favorite road trip is from Oslo to Bergen, Norway.

Thanks for your comment, Sonya! A friend of mine did that trip as well. I heard it’s highly recommended.
Wonderful selection of photos. I too love to travel on as empty as possible road. Enjoying the view is of course one of the main advantages, but that’s not all. Imagine a road with only one lane per direction. Now, it’s clear that one would not want any loris in front, right?
Traveling by night is also another moment when I like an empty road
Don’t you?
Hi Lori, A road with only one lane, now that sounds pretty appealing. And yes, I LOVE driving on an empty road at night. I will always remember those moments!
Stunning images! Who was the photographer?
I’m also curious as to where the first post was taken as it looks like a road we drove on in Calabria a couple of years ago.

Lara, I’m sorry to say that I didn’t write down the name of the photographers. Lesson learned! I downloaded the photos from sxc.hu Perhaps I can find the source to the first photo.
In a month or two I will go around Australia and will need to drive on a lot of empty roads. Should be fun
.-= Vi´s last blog ..Australia travel planner =-.
That sound real fun, Vi. Are you still traveling in Australia?
wow, amazing shots! they all look like great sceneries to drive by

Totally! They’re special in their own way.
Reminds me of my motorbike rides in the Scottish Highlands, open roads for miles. You can’t beat it.

You make me start daydreaming
Great shots.
Without a doubt.
I sooooo agree with that! And those are gorgeous photos all of them! Love them!
Thanks for commenting!
Beautiful photos ! We drove from Seattle to Yellowstone, just terrific being on those open roads with so few cars around. And we drove in the Alentejo in Portugal which can be utterly deserted, but fabulous !

Hi Philip, Those both road trips sound amazing!
The only time I ever feel like driving is on roads like the ones pictured. Beautiful.
Beautiful indeed.
How do you manage to make such stunning photos. All of them are amazing, but I specifically love #2. I can see why you love ‘open roads’. I feel the same
.-= Fida´s last blog ..May 22, imagine… =-.
Fida, The photos are courtesey of sxc.hu
But stunning they are! Number 2 is also my favorite. Reminds me of the scenery in a dream I had not too long ago.
These are great photos. Very exalting and uplifting. Have you ever tried to drive through UK’s Lake District. The place also offers great views and majestic sceneries like the ones in your photos. If you haven’t, then let me the one to tell you that it is worth the long drive, even if you are alone.

I havent driven through UK’s Lake District yet but would love to. Thanks for the suggestion, Kenneth.
All of these roads look amazing. Being from NYC I don’t get to experience much of this. I love driving so when I go on road trips cross country and am on roads like these I find it to be very calming and serene
I can understand that. Even though New York is hard to beat, I can imagine it’s really pleasant to get out of the city once in a while.
Wonderful pictures ! I love to take pictures of the nature, roads, animals. I had a chance to take amazing photos of the road while we were traveling across the west side of the US.
I would love to see those photos of yours. Feel free to share a link if you have an online gallery or Flickr profile.
