If you’re on a budget and don’t mind sharing a room with like-minded travelers, hostel is a perfect choice. During our visit I found four favorites.

1. Hostelling International New York (891 Amsterdam Avenue)

The largest hostel in New York offers comfy and spacious rooms, guest discounts, included breakfast, and a nice outdoor terrace. Their own back patio and garden is Manhattan’s largest private green space. The hostel is only three blocks from Central Park and one block from Broadway Avenue.

2. Bowery’s Whitehouse Hotel of New York (340 Bowery)

Bowery’s is conveniently situated in the No-Ho district. Prices start at $28.00 per person – you can’t find any better price than that on private rooms in the city. If you do, let me know. Our double room was basic (two beds and a wardrobe), but worth every dollar.

3. The Gershwin Hotel (7 East 27th Street)

A stylish boutique hostel centrally located near Empire State Building. Even though The Gershwin is managed like a hotel and doesn’t have common hostel facilities such as kitchen, dining area, and laundry room, it is a hostel. We didn’t have time to stay, but will gladly give it a chance during a future New York visit.

4. Chelsea International Hostel (between 7th and 8th Avenues on 20th Street)

Chelsea International Hostel offers airport pick up, 24-hour reception, common room, guest kitchen, private courtyard, security lockers, no curfew, dorms from $30 a night and doubles at $70 a night. Great value for money.
