Åre, the most popular ski resort in Sweden, is located by Lake Åre near Östersund in the area Jämtland. In my opinion, it’s even the best ski resort in Scandinavia, a terrific place to ski whether you are 7, 25 or 50-years-old. The ski system has pistes and off-piste to suit everyone from complete beginners to professional extreme skiers. I remember the first time we came to Björnen, east of Åre, and tried to make our luck in one of the blue slopes. Because of the wide and easy pistes, Bjornen is perfect for kids and beginners. When our skills improved we skipped Björnen and headed directly to Are’s main ski-system. One year we lived in Duved, west of Åre. Unlike Björnen this ski-system is not linked to Åre, but great if you prefer a calmer location and less crowds.
Åre has gained a lot of attention since the World Ski Championship in February 2007 and attracts visitors from Sweden as well as Europe and the rest of the world. For the ultimate ski vacation, avoid the Swedish holidays (especially Easter) when the ski lift lines tend to be longer.
For the best view over Åre, walk (or pay the scooter to take you) up to Åreskutan’s Peak about 1,420 m above the sea.
Apart from awesome skiing, Åre offers great after-ski — especially at Hotel Diplomat and Bygget — and the nightlife won’t make you disappointed either.

I agree with you, Are is a great place. When we went, we also drove to Ice Driver and spent the day driving on the frozen lakes in their rally prepped cars. Had a great time in the Porsche 911, I’d never have beleived I could go sideways to fast! I’ve added thier website as a link, well worth a call.

Thanks for the advice, I’m British and would mind doing a ski season over there, Any ideas on finding work or is it near any large cites?

Hi jeremy,
The closest city is Östersund with 59 000 inhabitants, takes about 1,20 h – 2,20 h depending on if you travel by train or bus. It’s way better to live and work in Åre though. I’d suggest traveling just before or in the beginning of the ski season (November), bring your CV and start looking for work once you’re there.
