The Vienna Verticals, Harry Grün, Klaus Bonazza and Jakob Karner will in the coming weeks climb the 20,570 feet high Hunza Peak, in the Karakoram region of Pakistan. As the first athletes to ever attempt to reach the peak, the three Viennese climbers will report through texts, photos, videos and audio recordings on tripwolf.com.
Users of tripwolf can follow the team’s progress at the tripwolf traveler profile for VIEverticals in Pakistan.
Experts consider their expedition one of the most ambitious alpine challenges of recent times. The climbers intend to reach the Hunza Peak within approximately five weeks. During the climb of the 4000 feet high “Big Wall, a 31 x 75 inch big platform made of aluminum and cloth will be attached to the wall by a hook and serve as their home for three weeks.
“All that’s not tied to us, will end up 10,000 feet below us in the gab of a glacier,” said Jakob Karner. “At this height the oxygen level is still around 40% of the normal level. Every day, we will climb in completely unknown territory – the bodily and physical challenges will be enormous.”
Jakob Karner and his two team mates will carry about 440 pounds of essential equipment and supply at a temperature of -20 Fahrenheit at night and 105 Fahrenheit during the day.
