Malmo is Sweden’s third greatest city, situated on the southern tip of the country close to the Oresund Bridge that leads to Copenhagen. In the Western Harbor, Espresso House is a popular place to grab a cup of coffee, lunch, chat and look at passer-bys from the open-air café.

Once a desolated industrial area, the Western Harbor has developed into a hip and charming quartier with eateries, cafés, shops and galleries. The trendy architecture lines the boardwalk and several bathing bridges face the sea. Teenagers, students and the 20 to 30 age bracket tend to hang out in the Western Harbor while families and children spend the summer days on Malmo’s famous beach “Ribban”.
The Western Harbor attracts many tourists, partly because of Turning Torso, a 190 meter high residential building with 54 floors. Turning Torso was designed for the Bo01 area by the Spanish architecture Santiago Calatrava, inspired by the human form in motion. It is the second highest residential block in Europe, after Triumph-Palace (264 m) in Moscow.

Hi Erica,
You’ve written a really nice article. I moved from the UK to Malmo in 2007 and I think the Western Harbour is a fantastic place, especially in summer.
Did you also know about its environmental credentials? I’ve written about a little about its use of 100% renewable enrgy here on my website at http://www.citiesforpeople.net/cities/westernharbour.html

@Michael,
I totally agree about the Western Harbour. I love it there! So far I’ve only experienced the place during the summer (lived in Malmö for 3 months in ’06), but I can imagine the other seasons must be really nice too.
Thanks for the link. I didn’t know about this. Great post! Making cities more sustainable is an important matter. I hope other Swedish cities will follow in Malmö’s footsteps.
Malmo is also Swedens’s first fair trade city, hopefully there will be to come in Sweden too.
