Apart a few countries in the world, how many chances are there to have your hotel burning or to sit besides a terrorist on the airplane? It's far more dangerous to travel by car and your little cottage in the woods is no way more secure than any other place. To really enjoy a trip, first rule is to feel quite and at ease.
