In 2011, Varberg on the Swedish west coast celebrated 200 years as a health resort. Also known for its castle and fortress, the town has several properties dedicated to Spa and wellbeing.

Hotell Gästis

Double Room at Hotel Gästis.

Hotel Gästis is situated in “The Torell House”, a red 17th-century building named after scientist and explorer Otto Torell (1828-1900), opposite the English Park only 200 meter from the central station in Varberg.

Of the hotel’s 70 rooms, no room looks alike another and differs in interior, shape and size. Like every room, my double room on the second floor had walls decorated with selected reproductions of old book covers and works by famous art masters. Opposite the desk were a shelf with magazines and a book case with literature for loan or sale. Guests can bring one book home for free (I picked Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers), any other book is SEK 10 (about $1.5), and during a stay one can borrow an unlimited amount of books from the dining room, the smoking lounge and bookshelves in the hotel. Roughly 15,000 books fill the shelves throughout Hotel Gästis’ multiple floor plans and long winding corridors. In the hotel’s elevator, one rolling wall is covered with hundreds of book covers from the 1940s.

The owner Lasse Diding has embraced the concept of “Everything shouldn’t cost” by offering guests daily newspapers and magazines, 600 VHS films for free rental, free breakfast buffet, afternoon coffee, evening buffet (with bread, cold and warm dishes and dessert), access to their private bath, and free laundry service. Diding wants guests to feel at home, and what better way than making sure everyone is well taken care of through generous services.

The books may make you spend hours in one of the hotel’s cozy reading corners. The Lenin bath in the cellar lets you unwind in another way.

The bath is a mini replica of the 18th-century Lenin bath in the Smolnij Palace in S:t Petersburg, former Leningrad (1924-91), where the revolutionaries of the communism passed time in Lenin’s favorite bath. Apparently, Diding visited the bath in Leningrad in 1983, saved the idea, and created his bath from memory. Political viewpoints aside, it’s an admirable achievement. The 200 sqm relax area in mainly dark blue ceramic also has a cold bath, foot baths, steam sauna, treatment rooms and a relax room with more books.

Staff members have worked at Hotel Gästis as much as 5, 10 or 20 years. Although the hotel is newly renovated, the peace and quiet of the old days, a hundred or so years back when Gästis received its first guests, is still present.

Escaping the frenetic pace of everyday life and taking a weekend away from it all is a popular pastime the world over. That is why searching for a bargain spa voucher or exclusive spa deals is so common amongst Google users – many are looking for that opportunity to take a relaxing retreat.

But which countries harbour the world’s best spas on their shores? We have compiled a list of the nations who seem best equipped to wind you down and re-invigorate your body.

Great Britain

Residents of the UK needn’t scoure the globe for relaxing hideaways – the country is blessed with a plentiful supply of spas and retreats that can compete with the best in the world when it comes to luxury. A number of beautiful, historic buildings around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have been lovingly turned into luxurious spas, and there are some stunning newly-built spas around the country. In the north of the UK, it is hard to beat the Macdonald Marine Hotel in North Berwick, while the treatments and facilities on offer at Whittlebury Hall and spa days in Northamptonshire keep people in the south feeling thoroughly revived and relaxed.

Thailand

The wet, warm, humid climate of Thailand can make any visit to the country feel like time spent in a steam room. Spa experts in Thailand have used their country’s natural conditions as inspiration for some of the most indulgent health spas on the planet. The Banyan Tree in Cherngtalay is ideally located by the spectacular beach at Bang Tao Bay and boasts 123 villas, each with its own open-air bathtub and private garden. If that’s not enough to tempt you, there’s an 18-hole championship golf course on site too.

USA

It should be noted that America is not without its pitfalls when it comes to spas. But discerning spa lovers will take the time to scour the country and seek out the gems, such as the Enchantment Resort and Mii Amo Spa. At an altitude of 4,600 feet, visitors to the spa enjoy a fresher climate than the rest of Arizona, as well as one of the most unique settings in the world to enjoy a spa that is uniquely intertwined with the surrounding natural habitat.

Italy

On a balmy summer’s evening, there are few places in the world more idyllic than the outdoor swimming pool at Le Sirenuse luxury hotel in Positano, Italy. Surrounded by the lush green hills of the Amalfi Coast, this serene spa enjoys panoramic views of Positano Bay, and visitors can dine by moonlight at the poolside and eat food cooked at the beautifully decorated outdoor grill that is surrounded by hand-made tile mosaics. The treatments at the spa are typically Italian, full of flair and creativity, delivered by some of the best masseurs in Europe.

Indonesia

Almost everything in Indonesia, from the food to the fashion, the architecture to the interior design, is inspired by the ocean. This extends to the spa resorts too and the aquatic influence on places like the Four Seasons resort at Jimbaran Bay on the island of Bali helps to create some of the best environments in which to relax and unwind. Choose from hilltop or Oceanside dining at the Four Seasons and immerse yourself in the ancient spirituality of Indonesia.
