There are many places in this world where one feels at peace inside, a place where a certain affinity is felt. For me this is Varna in Bulgaria.
Varna is one of Europe’s oldest cities, having been a settlement as far back as the 4th to 5th century BC. Because of its placement as a port on the Black Sea, it was a notable city historically and also an important part of the Crusades in the Middle Ages as one of the last battles occurred there in 1444. This rich history is only part of the reason why I love Varna so much, there is more to understand about this glorious city.
While many visit Golden Sands, the tourist summer vacation spot in the province of Varna, it is the city itself that carries the love of the Bulgarian people. In the summer months Bulgarians from across the land flock to Varna for its sun, sea, sand and attractions.
There are two beautiful golden beaches in Varna, one of which is more family oriented while the other caters for the younger travelers. Both beaches have cafes, beach bars and small shops located in the vicinity for those refreshments needed after fun and frolics on the sand.
Once away from the sand Varna has plenty to offer even the most hardest to please. For those wishing to sample the culture there are wonderful old buildings of architectural beauty, such as the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral, and amazing Bulgarian restaurants where you can try the local dishes.
If a bustling nightlife is what you are after Varna offers vibrant bars and nightclubs that will get your feet moving and ensure a great evening out. The Bulgarian people love a night out where they can enjoy the company of friends over a beer or cocktail, so why not join them?
For those who love retail therapy Varna caters to all tastes with small privately owned boutiques sandwiched in quaint streets to large malls with big brand names such as the amazing Hotspot designer store.
Should none of the above catch your attention, as you wish for a quiet day away from it all, go to the beautiful Varna sea gardens to stroll through eye catching and awe inspiring gardens cultivated to capture the imagination.
From the first time I traveled to Varna it is a place that has stayed in my thoughts and brought a smile to my face. Varna is such a fun and mystic place where history and present day combine to deliver the ultimate in enjoyment.

It brings us back to the historical time! Nice and beatuful picture. Good shot!
Gorgeous!! I had a wonderful time in Varna about a year and a half ago. I loved the main drag, and the beach. It was the perfect resting stop between Istanbul and Veliko Tarnovo in the mountains. I got so tanned in Varna!!
Hi Abby,
Sounds like you loved Varna as much as Guy. And enjoying the town and relaxing on the beach does sound ideal after a city break in Istanbul.
