Falun – Design in Dalarna

Located in the tourist region of Dalarna and divided by Faluan river, Falun is a residential town and UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its old copper mine and the deep red paint Falu red, which is used on Swedish wooden cottages. Also recognized as a sports town, Falun has the symbol of a ski jump from Lugnet ski stadium. The sport complex at Lugnet has capacity for 58 sports and will host the Ski World Championships in 2015.

The town and surrounding area offer a variety of sights and activities. Choose between guided tours in Falun Mine, Sweden’s largest workplace in the 17th century, Carl Larsson-gården, former home of celebrated Swedish artist Carl Larsson, impressive renaissance work of the Kristine Church at the main square, nearby Lake Runn with 365 islands (ideal for bathing, kayaking and long-distance skating), Siljan lake area 30 minutes drive away, outdoor arena Dalhalla in Rattvik, and not least, a rich culture life.

Dalarnas Museum Falun Design in Dalarna

I spent part of my visit in the County Museum of Dalarna to see the Art Gallery, the Print Arts Hall, and a permanent exhibition of Dalarna art, as well as exhibitions of Dalarna Horses, folk painting, and Nobel prize-winner Selma Lagerlöf’s study and library. With its unique history and tradition, the museum reflects Dalarna’s collective cultural heritage. On the premises, Kopparhatten Café and Restaurant serves an outstanding, mostly vegetarian lunch buffet and a selection of home-baked cakes and chocolate pralines.

I continued in the same theme with a walk along Slaggatan, known as Dalarna’s Design street because of its shops with fashion, interior, design and handicraft. The street strecthes straight ahead right through town and parallell with the river.

On number 20, Blå Snigel Handicraft has unique art handicrafts by local artists.

Neighboring Galleri Se, run by the association SE KONST (translated “SEE ART”) covers 40 sqm exhibition space with visual art.

Falu Prison Youth Hostel

Falu Prison Youth Hostel Falun Design in Dalarna

A prison between 1849 and 1995, the property was bought in 2000 with the idea of developing a centrally located youth hostel. After six years of restorations and renovations, Falu Prison Youth Hostel was born.

On the ground floor, there’s a small reception, cozy common area with old-fashioned furniture, and a breakfast room. Floor one and floor two offer 86 beds in total; single rooms, double rooms, and four-bed rooms. Sofas, armchairs, tables, benches, magazines, a bookcase filled with old paperbacks and a guest computer make the first-floor hostel corridor more homely. There’s also a clean and well-equipped guest kitchen. Every floor has two shared toilets and showers, one for ladies and one for gentlemen. For those who want to learn more about the history of the building, there’s a prison museum with free entrance open daily.

Rules around cleaning, silence after 11pm, lost keys (which will be charged SEK 500 per key), and prohibition of smoking (a fire alarm will start at the slightest smoke and false alarm will be charged with SEK 7,000), assures that the place runs as smoothly as possible.

With high seasons during spring and autumn, the hostel has mixed guests (students from the university, workers, school classes and tourists) mainly from Scandinavia but also Italy, Germany and foreign students from all around the world.

Clarion Collection Hotel Bergmästaren

Clarion Collection Hotel Bergmästaren Falun Design in Dalarna

For a hotel stay, Clarion Collection Hotel Bergmästaren has a central location a few minutes walk (only 300 meter) from the railway station.

Clarion Collection lives up to its saying “A bit as coming home when you are away. A welcoming feeling for people who travel much”. They make guests feel at home partly by making sure they never need to go hungry, no matter the time of the day, without charging extra. After check-in, you can serve yourself some coffee or tea, or fresh fruit in the lobby. Between 3-5pm, there’s afternoon coffee with newly baked waffles or home-baked goods, and after 6pm a generous dinner buffet with salads, cold and warm dishes, dessert and fresh bread. They even go further than this by offering late-arriving guests a lighter evening sandwich, sparkling water and a fresh fruit. Besides this, there’s a cozy pub/lounge with cold beers, champagne, wine and espresso, and ice water is available 24/7.

In the morning, an organic breakfast buffet, including the hotel’s own Bermästaremüsli and a selection of nuts, seeds and dried fruits for a healthy meal, proves that guests can count on Clarion Collection Hotel Bergmästaren.

All rooms and suites, 85 in total, are classically furnished with convenient amenities, and has selected magazines and classic books on the bed shelves.

Considering everything that includes a stay at Clarion Collection Hotel Bergmästaren (there’s also a relaxation area with Jacuzzi, sauna and sunbeds), it’s no surprise to hear that the hotel has served as a temporary home for around a half million travelers.

Peace & Love in Borlange

Borlänge Peace & Love in Borlange

Photo: Ryan Garrison

A town since 1898, Borlange is located by Dalalven river in the region of Dalarna and has a strong industrial background with its iron and paper mills. Home to the province’s magnificent Tuna Church, Jussi Björling Museum with works from the legendary Swedish tenor, Romme Alpin for downhill skiing, Sweden’s supposedly coolest water park Aqua Nova, Kupolen – the largest shopping center in Dalarna, 80 or so shops in the town center, and a variety of international cuisines represented, Borlange has its share of attractions.

In the last decade Borlange has also drawn visitors thanks to its music festival Peace & Love, which was first organized in a smaller scale in 1999. Ten years later, more than 40,000 tickets were sold making it Sweden’s largest festival ever with both national and international artists. This year’s festival themed “A New World” took place throughout five days at the end of July with the leading acts Rihanna and Mumford & Sons.

With workshops, seminars, debates, dance and new circus, Peace & Love is more than a music festival and the message of Solidarity, Diversity and Understanding, along with peace and love for a better world, is spread long after each festival has ended and a new one begins. In other words, all the time – through Peace & Love Foundation, Peace & Love Artists (agency, recording company, publisher and management), Peace & Lovestrings’ classic music performances, Peace & Love Havana, a two-year-old festival on Cuba, Peace & Love Film Festival, and, not least, Café Peace & Love.

Since the summer of 2009, Café Peace & Love is Borlänge’s coziest and coolest café with organic fair-trade food and home-baked sweets, poetry nights, important seminars, and interesting music evenings.

Quality Hotel Galaxen

Quality Hotel Galaxen Peace & Love in Borlange

For those who prefer quality and aren’t visiting Borlange just for the festival, Quality Hotel Galaxen has 128 rooms in a central location within walking distance from the bus and railway station, only 500 meter from Kupolen shopping center. As a large conference and entertainment center, the hotel has a mix of conference guests and other guests. In the same building is also Framtidsmuseet, The Musuem of the Future, a place for popular science experiments.

My standard room on a higher floor had a soothing interior in natural colors, bathroom with shower, desk, armchair, TV and free Wi-Fi. All the comforts one needs.

Sportsbar Galaxen on the ground floor has dinner from 6pm on weekdays and Saturdays. Vegetarian choices included Forest mushroom soup with bread, Nachos with salsa and crème fraiche, and Herb-fried quorn filet with Parmesan sauce, marinated red onion and roasted potato. Guests can watch sports on nine high-resolution plasma screens, and there are regular Soul Nights and other activities.

The highlight at Quality Hotel Galaxen is the 8th-floor relax area with bubble pool, sauna, and work-out equipment.

Vasteras is Sweden’s fifth largest municipality, located on the shore of Lake Malaren, with Scandinavia’s largest inland harbor, only 100 km or 53 minutes by train from Stockholm.

First-time visitors can enjoy any of the following things to see and do.

Vasteras aspires for a vote as Sweden’s “City Center of the Year” in 2013 and has a lot speaking for it. The city has several pedestrian walkways and a total of seven indoor shopping malls, including top-modern Kvarteret IGOR with 11,000 sqm of boutiques. And H&M, with 1700 branches worldwide, opened its first shop in Västerås in 1947.

With the explanation “worth making a detour for”, Vasteras Cathedral received three stars by Guide Michelin. Dating back to the 11th century, it has one of Sweden’s largest 17th century organs, neo-Gothic 17th century template painting, and a 92 meter high spire. There are guided tours in summer and organ concerts at lunchtime every Saturday.

As a city with the largest lake side port in the Nordic countries, Vasteras is the gateway to over 100 islands in the archipelago. If you’re a group traveling together, why not rent a rib boat to discover the area from the water.

Where to Stay

First Hotel Plaza

First Hotel Plaza Vasteras the City by Lake Malaren

Centrally located on the square Aseatorget only a few minutes walk from the central station, First Hotel Plaza is one of the most easily accessible hotels in Vasteras. The hotel is situated inside the high-rise building of Skrapan (The Scraper), which also houses apartments and a shopping mall with shops, cafés and restaurants.

The hotel has 203 rooms and suites. At 18-20 sqm with more than enough space, comfortable bed, bathroom with bathtub, large desk, two telephones (whereof one in the bathroom), free Wi-Fi, and view over the square below and the lake, my Standard room had no faults. Those looking for something more spacious can book one of the Superior Rooms, Deluxe Rooms or Suites.

In the evening, bistro restaurant “Karlsson på Taket” serves an à la carté menu accompanied by views over Lake Malaren. In 2010, chef Tomas Rehman was awarded the best chef in Vasteras, so you’re in good hands. On the 24th floor above, Sky Bar is one of Sweden’s highest cocktail and piano bars.

Another great benefit with staying at First Hotel Plaza is the Spa and relax facility on the 25th floor. Not least, the glass-walled elevator with equally beautiful views that preceeds any sauna session or spa treatment.

Elite Stadshotellet

Elite Stadshotellet1 Vasteras the City by Lake Malaren

For classic luxury combined with modern comfort, consider Elite Stadshotellet. The hotel is situated in one of Sweden’s most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings, which was designed by architect Erik Hahr and completed in 1907. The building truly stands out at the main square Stora Torget and has become a central meeting point for guest and locals, partly thanks to the onsite gastro pub Bishop’s Arms. The British-inspired pub is well-visited for its wide range of whisky and beer. One would probably need to spend weeks there to try out every sort.

Inside the elegant hotel lobby, guests receive warm welcomes and courteous service. With 137 rooms, categorized as Standard, Superior, Deluxe or Suite, and suitable for both rest or work, Elite Stadshotellet can provide for a range of wants and budgets. All rooms have shower or bath, hairdryer, cable TV, telephone, and wireless Internet via the Cloud. Not least, a much appreciated Pillow menu. Depending on needs and preferences in terms of comfort, every guest can choose a pillow or two from the menu, and then borrow it from the reception. There are fluffy and luxurious down pillows, fibre pillows, formable pillows, ergonomic pillows, and extra soft pillows.

Elite Stadshotellet room1 Vasteras the City by Lake Malaren

My double room on the second floor had wooden floors, white walls, minimalist interior, orange details, and a second-floor view of the cathedral. The hotel writes: “…with our beautiful rooms, high quality service and exquisite food, we hope to be able to exceed your expectations.” They did.

A Spa Hotel Stay in Sodertalje

Södertälje City Park A Spa Hotel Stay in Sodertalje I had heard and read a bit about Sadertalje prior to my visit, much of it far from positive, and traveled with hope but no expectations determined to give the city at least one chance. An industrial city about 30 km south of Stockholm, Sodertalje already has the location speaking for it.

A five to ten-minute bus ride from the town’s nearest railway stop Sydertalje Syd takes visitors to the center of Sodertalje. Once there, I strolled along Järnagatan which continues to the pedestrian Storgatan, lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and shopping malls. However, my hope for Sodertalje decreased early when I saw the large building of a certain fast-food chain on M polluting the otherwise beautiful waterside area by pedestrian Strandgatan and Slussgatan.

Fortunately, a visit to Luna Kulturhus, a cultural house with an art hall, a 100-year-old city library, large lobby with daily newspapers and magazines, and Nova for creative workshops and music nights aimed to young people between 13 and 25, increased my attraction. Sodertalje art hall features exhibitions of Swedish, Nordic and international art in an airy, rectangular space on the upper floor of the house.

Even though downtown Sodertalje isn’t unattractive and the surrounding area, including the city park, can appear stunning when the weather cooperates with clear and sunny skies, I decided to spend my visit mainly at my hotel for the night, Scandic Skogshöjd, much because the hotel is a destination in itself.

Scandic Skogshöjd is located in the center of the city, just 30 minutes by car from the Swedish capital. The hotel’s inviting lobby sets the standard high and provides a stylish space for guests to unwind or socialise, depending on the time of day.

The cocktail bar is equally stylish.

The modern rooms, 225 in total, range from Nordic-style Standard rooms and larger Family Standards to more comfortable Junior Suites and Superior Extra rooms. Standard rooms cover up to 21 sqm and have wooden floors, private bathroom with bathtub and/or shower, TV with movie channels, desk and armchair, and wireless internet access.

The hotel’s highlight is first rate Scandic Skogshöjd SPA with relaxation area, large pool, Jacuzzi, and optional selection of treatments for body, mind and soul.

A swim in the luxurious hotel pool or some time in the whirl pools as part of a stay at Scandic Skogshöjd is well worth the extra SEK 50. Visitors who don’t stay at the hotel can use the spa facility at a higher cost.

Nykoping is located by the coast, one hour south of Stockholm and only 7 km from Stockholm Skavsta Airport. As one of the oldest cities in Sweden, founded in 1187, Nykoping offers many sights such as one of the foremost guest harbors in Sweden, the regional history and culture-focused Sörmlands Museum, and Hellmanska Gården, a café and bakery housed in premises dating to the early 18th century.

Scandic Nyköping City

Scandic Nyköping City Art & Design in Nykoping

Scandic Nyköping City on Brunnsgatan 31 in the heart of the city is an outstanding example of a Scandic property with its own personality, atmosphere and style. Thanks to Gothenburg-based interior designers STYLT Trampoli, who designed the restaurant/lobby, and well-attentive staff, the hotel doesn’t rest on the level of average Scandic hotels but raises the bar considerably with an original idea.

The interior is based on story telling around the hotel’s hostess “Miss Nyköping 1962″, who lived a restless life, partly as a Pan Am flight attendant, and returned to Nyköping with lots of objects from her time around the world. Hence, the somewhat flight-inspired interior. For example, the lamps to the left in the café looks like airplane engines.

The combined lobby and restaurant by the entrance creates a natural and dynamic meeting place for guests and visitors. On another side of the reception, the hotel’s whisky bar makes room for more intimate conversations. Opposite, several groups of round tables provide further space for dining guests. Urban photos on the wall improve on the character of the fittingly named Voyage restaurant.

Scandic Nyköping City single Art & Design in Nykoping

At 17 sqm, each standard room has bathroom with shower and are equipped with hairdryer, desk, armchair, TV, and Wi-Fi. Economy rooms cover 14 sqm. Those wanting extra space can select between Superiors, Junior Suites or the luxurious Suite.

In my small single room on the second floor, I particularly appreciated the high ceilings, view of the pedestrian shopping street Västra Storgatan below, and the picture above the bed. Every room features different pictures.

With a health and fitness facility, guests have no excuses to skip a work out session and one can look forward to some well-spent time in the adjacent Jacuzzi and steam sauna afterwards.

The Heart of Katrineholm

Advantageously situated between Linkoping and Norrkoping, only an hour by train from Stockholm and two from Gothenburg, Katrineholm is a small town with a combination of culture-rich life and closeness to nature, forests, and hundreds of lakes. Although the surroundings offer plenty of activities, I decided to focus my visit on the heart of town, partly as Katrineholm received the award “The town center of the year” in 1997 and the best street environment in 2001.

Without plans or a map I strolled through town on the lookout for interesting places to visit.

Sushi Corner

Sushi Corner The Heart of Katrineholm

As a person who loves sushi it would take a lot for me to not notice a sushi bar. Sushi Corner on the corner to Drottninggatan and Köpmangatan has a low-key space with good sushi.

Annas Gröna Rum

Annas Gröna Rum The Heart of Katrineholm

A stone’s throw from the sushi restaurant, Annas Gröna Rum is the town’s much liked go-to place for plants, flowers and decorations.

The Culture House Ängeln

Katrineholm Art Hall The Heart of Katrineholm

A couple of minutes stroll along the same street, on Djulögatan 27, the culture house Kulthurhuset Ängeln offers cultural events, an art hall with contemporary art by regional, national or international artist, library and café.

Local Gallery

Heading east on Djulögatan, I stumbled upon a modest gallery with impressive paintings from local artists. Every painting was for sale via a public auction.

Located by Stortorget Square on Katrineholm’s main pedestrian street Köpmansgatan, Sköna Gertruds Te & Kaffe has everything to please those who are fond of tea, coffee and chocolate.

Hotel Statt

For visitors who want easy access to Sultans home-baked delicacies, Hotel Statt is situated right across the street. Sweets aside, there are many other reasons to book a room here.

With a location only 50 meter from the railway station, guests who arrive by train won’t need to book a taxi (unless they travel with a lot of luggage).

The hotel is home to one of the town’s most popular meeting places, Scottish-influenced Pub Statt with tasty food and several TVs that show sport events. On weekends the restaurant turns into a nightclub.

Lunch is served all weekdays, in summer the glass terrace is quite appreciated.

A sauna on floor 5 provides relaxation, as does the ground-floor library with a selection of books and international newspapers.

In the morning, a luxurious breakfast buffet is served in the hotel’s elegant 20th century dining hall.

Hotel Statt The Heart of Katrineholm

Of Hotel Statt’s 92 non-smoking hotel rooms, 45 are single, 47 are double, and 5 are VIP. My rectangular, not so small, single room on the second floor had WC, shower, hair dryer, desk, armchair, TV, and free wireless Internet. (Some rooms have broadband  Internet.) All in all, a nice hotel stay.

Livin’ Hotel and Youth Hostel

Livin 9 Things to See & Do in Orebro

Livin’s slogan “room for everyone” was well chosen. As a combined low-price hotel with single and double rooms, apartment hotel for weekly or monthly rent and hostel with rooms for one to eight persons, Livin’ can cater to backpackers, single budget travelers, couples, friends, families, weekly commuters, and even business travelers.

Previously award-winning hostel Grenadjären, they recently moved into renovated premises only 10 minutes walk from Resecentrum train and bus hub and is now part of exclusive Sweden Hotels.

Livin room 9 Things to See & Do in Orebro

My modern single hotel room on the fifth floor had a private bathroom with shower, small wooden desk fixed to the wall, an armchair and a little table below the TV, a ’90 bed, free Wi-Fi, large window, view of apartments across the street, and an appreciated take on lightning (with two ceiling lamps and silver lamps for work, reading and the bed). While I didn’t find the interior color choices very flattering, I loved how the three squared black-and-white images on the wall gave more personality to the room. Sensitive sleepers will benefit from ear plugs as the room is far from sound-proof.

Livin guest kitchen 9 Things to See & Do in Orebro

The guest kitchen on the second floor, which is free to use for all guests, is one of the more spacious and cleanest hostel guest kitchens I have seen and makes cooking an equally attractive option as eating out. Guests who prefer otherwise can get 10% discount at Paco’s Mexican Grill and 10% at La Gondola. Livin’ also recommends nearby supermarkets and restaurants.

There’s a sauna on the sixth floor, laundry onsite and at Nordtvätten across the street, bike rental in summer, guest computer by the reception, and discounted work out sessions at nJoy 150m away. A free hotel-standard breakfast is served in the breakfast room every morning. Not a bad deal for the price of a hostel dorm bed or an affordable hotel room.

Another reason to stay at Livin’ is that they employ people who were born outside of Sweden and those who are long-term unemployed through their work with Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Lake Town Mariestad

Previously a residence town in Skaraborgs county, Mariestad is a town in Mariestad’s municipality with over 20,000 inhabitants.   Thanks to its beautiful location in the Vastergotland province by lake Vanern, Mariestad is visited by many tourists in summer.

Here are three popular sights to see in the Mariestad area.

The Old Town

Gamla Stan The Lake Town Mariestad

One of the most well-preserved old towns in Sweden has 18th and 19th century wooden houses, cobblestone streets, a striking cathedral, and an attractive location near the waterside.

Vadsbo Museum

The Eastern Stable features the Industrial Museum of Mariestad’s four-century industrial development.

Mariestad Archipelago

Hotell Aqva

Located along Viktoriagatan a short walk from the train station, Hotell Aqva is a small, three-star hotel and member of the hotel chain Sweden Hotels. I appreciate the hotel’s clear stance on a positive greeting for all with wheelchair-friendly access, free parking on site, as well as complimentary coffee, cookies or fruit by the front desk (and at the coffee station on the first floor). There’s also a telephone in the hotel’s entrance to use at no cost, should the need arise.

Hotell Aqva The Lake Town Mariestad

With only 19 rooms, all modern with unique designs, the hotel maintains a personal feel. I fell in love with my first-floor single room at once. Although not spacious, the interior of wooden floors, natural colors, a striped wall by the bed, comfortable bed space, bed lamp in silver, photos of stones with the messages FAITH and HOPE, and view over colourful rooftops contributed to a cozy atmosphere and won me over in an instant. As all guests, I also had free wireless internet, shower with WC and cable TV (despite small), and more than okay drinkable tap water from Lake Vanern.

Previously a village with the name Oscarsstad, Arvika celebrated one hundred years as a town in 2011. Known as a host for the Arvika Festival, a yearly music festival from 1992-2010, Arvika is situated by a bay of Glafsfjorden, the only inland fjord in Sweden.

Here are a few sights to see during a visit.

Arvika Town Park

Founded in 1913, the town park in Arvika is beautifully located by the waterside. In the center of the park is Christian Eriksson’s famous sculpture “Sommardopp” (“Summer dip”). The park is home to pergola, flourishing flower beds, a bird pond, and a play ground.

Arvika Art Hall

Arvika Konsthall Sigths & A Spa Hotel Stay in Arvika

The small gallery in Arvika, Arvika Konsthall, has multiple temporary exhibitions during the year and proves that it’s not the size of a gallery that matters but the quality of the art work inside it. Neighboring Arvika Konsthantverk is Sweden’s oldest shop for local handicraft. For other art in Arvika, lend a map at the tourist info center to see the many sculptures throughout town.

Arvika Fordonsmuseum

Arvika Fordonsmuseum, located in an old restored factory outside the center of town, has three museums in one place; around 120 veteran cars, wagons, motorcycles and bicycles from the beginning of the 19th century until today.

Rackstad Museum and Oppstuhage

The former childhood home of sculptor Christian Eriksson is located in Taserud and now serves as the entrance and café of the Rackstad Museum. Of the two extended wings, one features works by the Swedish artists who settled around lake Rocken at the turn of the 20th century, while the new hall houses temporary exhibits. Outside, sculptures by Eriksson and his son offer a reason to stroll on the park-like grounds. Nearby Oppstuhage is where the sculptor himself lived and worked.

With a building dating back to the 18th century, history remains inside the walls of Scandic Arvika. This eco-labelled spa hotel is located on Torggatan within a few minutes walk from the train station, by the pedestrian shopping area in town.

There are a total of 88 non-smoking rooms and guests can choose between the room categories Standard, Economy, Economy Plus, Superior, Superior Extra and Junior Suite. My room on the highest floor had bathroom with shower, desk, two armchairs, and a TV fixed on the wall opposite the bed. Wooden floors and an inclined roof gave the space a cozy feel.

Karlstad: Sweden’s Sunniest Town

Founded by and named after King Karl IX, Karlstad is the Varmland province’s largest city located where Klaralven river meets lake Vanern. Known as a University City, an Event City and a Shopping City, Karlstad offers plenty of attractions for visitors who love sightseeing.

Sola i Karlstad

Sola i Karlstad Karlstad: Swedens Sunniest Town

A well-known resident.

Apparently one of Sweden’s sunniest towns, Karlstad has the symbol of a happy sun. Outside Elite Stadshotellet in Karlstad, a statue honors local waitress Eva Lisa Holtz, commonly known as “Sola i Karlstad” (the Sun in Karlstad), because of her joyful and sunny disposition.

The City Garden

Karlstad Stadsträdgård Karlstad: Swedens Sunniest Town

Situated south of the train station, the City Park was established in the early 1860s inspired by English-style parks and covers 5,5 hectare.

Varmland’s Museum

Värmlands Museum Karlstad: Swedens Sunniest Town

Varmland’s Museum has eight permanent exhibitions including coffee culture, city life, and local art from the 18th century until today in the house of Cyrillus, named after its architect, which also hosts temporary displays of contemporary art. Techniques include painting, graphic, photo, sculpture and handicraft.

Museiparken

Designed by architect Cyrillus Johansson, Museiparken surrounds the museum and offers beautiful views over the river. Apart from walking or jogging tracks and a nice green area in front of the museum building, it features a palace-looking house with courtyard, pergola, trees, flower arrangements, and a Taj Mahal-inspired reflective pool.

Mariebergsskogen

Mariebergsskogen Karlstad: Swedens Sunniest Town

Open all year round, Mariebergsskogen is ideal for families with its bathing sites in a bay of lake Vanern, picnic spots, adventure playground, open-air museum, 400-year-old pine forest, lawns, flowers, and summer entertainment (such as the Putte i Parken music festival). There’s also a café, waffle cabin, and restaurant.

The Almen Quarter

Kvarteret Almen Karlstad: Swedens Sunniest Town

Located by the western river branch, the Almen Quarter was a desirable area to live in during the 18th century and is now home to some of the town’s few old wooden buildings that survived the great fire in 1865.

The Old Stone Bridge

The twelve-arch Gamla Stenbron (The Old Stone Bridge) was built between 1761 and 1811 and is one of Sweden’s longest stone bridges at 168 meters.

Where to Stay

Scandic Winn

Scandic Winn Karlstad: Swedens Sunniest Town

Situated at Norra Strandgatan near the city library, Varmland’s Museum and the canal with shops, cafés and restaurants only a block away, Scandic Winn has an advantageous location for visitors.

Rooms range from 15-22 sqm Standard rooms, 26-28 sqm Superior rooms, Superior Extra and a luxurious 34 sqm top-floor suite. I loved the wood laminate flooring and minimalist interior in my standard room. But with the lack of enough room character and a high number of 199 rooms, Scandic Winn hasn’t managed to avoid the unoriginal feeling of a chain hotel. More than okay for a night’s sleep but not if one wants something that stands out.

Fortunately, the hotel facilities make up for this with a relaxation area with Jacuzzi and saunas as well as a modern gym. For a space without windows, I thought they did very well with large inspiring images that cover the walls and add color to an otherwise white room. I love when hotels care about the look and atmosphere of gyms and not only their work-out equipment.

Another highlight at Scandic Winn is Café Artist, the stylish onsite restaurant that offers Italian cuisine with an international touch, tapas on Fridays and a wine in the elegant piano bar. Not least, the well-prepared breakfast buffet with vegan-friendly organic oat meal, organic apple sauce and soy milk.

On the whole, even though it doesn’t entirely live up to its name, Scandic Winn provides a pleasant hotel stay.

Elite Stadshotellet

Elite Stadshotellet Karlstad: Swedens Sunniest Town

For an even more enviable location, Elite Stadshotellet by the river is an excellent choice.

Since its opening in 1870, Elite Stadshotellet has undergone repeated renovations and modernizations while still maintaining its classic charm. In the 19th century, Swedish author and poet Gustaf Fröding was one of the hotel’s many regular guests.

In recent years, they have renovated all 138 rooms. To preserve a part of the hotel’s classic environment and atmosphere, about 40 rooms have kept the Gustavian interior style after careful renovations.

Room categories include Standard, Superior, Deluxe and Suite. Like all rooms, my standard room on a lower floor had bathroom with shower or bathtub, cable TV, telephone, wireless Internet via the Cloud, desk and armchair. High ceilings were a much appreciated aspect and made the room feel less small. Book a room facing the river to make the most of the hotel’s location.

Standard single room.

In the evening, there’s the possibility to enjoy dinner in one of the hotel’s drawing-rooms or to pick your choice from The Bishop’s Arms’ generous assortment of beer and whiskey. Guests are equally well provided for in the morning with a luxurious breakfast buffet in an elegant mileu. No other hotel I know of, besides other Elite properties, offers Brämhults freshly pressed, high-quality, all-natural fruit juices (with the super-delicious mango and orange combination) as part of their breakfast buffet. Soy milk are available for vegans and lactose-intolerant guests. Another bonus, during summer, younger guests will receive a gift during check-in and access to a play room. Like always, Elite shows why their hotels are named Elite.
